In this paper I propose to analyse the subject: “the self”, yet not in a philosophical or metaphysical way, but from the viewpoint of an artist. Although unintentional and more a consequence that emerged naturally, this paper will have, for sure, a very personal note. The subject itself is as such.
I will try to write about what was the motivation of using oneself as topic for the final master’s degree project. Also, I intend to show how I managed to integrate the subject into a stage design artwork by creating an immersive space in which the viewer can sink and live the same experiences as the artist.
I will share my sources of inspiration. I will show objectively through a couple of concrete examples how other artists delivered similar messages through their work. I will exemplify how these artists used the “self” in their art, but even if using the same concept, their results are different.
I will exemplify how Cindy Sherman uses the ”self” to highlight other persons’s “selves” by creating different personas and how Pipilotti Rist expresses herself, just by simply exposing it and not necessarily through introspection. How she claims throughout her oeuvre that, while searching for beauty, she finds it in herself. Also, I want to show how Tracey Emin exposes herself, without any trace of timidity or shame and how she treats her work as a journal. And here there are a lot of “I”s’..
