In 2011, I started my bachelor’s degree in acting studies at the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy.
When entering the academy, I was not aware that the acting technique I was about to learn for the next four years would be based on Konstantin Stanislavski's acting method. And even though I knew that this method existed, I had only very abstract ideas about what it means to learn it. We had acting discipline based on the K.Stanislavski method for eight hours a day, four days a week, besides all other fields and additional preparations for the acting discipline with my peers over the weekend. Although this rhythm took four years, after finishing my studies, I still have many doubts if I understood the Konstantin Stanislavski method correctly. After graduating in 2015, I started to work as a professional actor in the state theatre, and now it is eight years that I have worked as an actor. Yet I am still confused about some terminology I learned in the method. One of the most important terms that gave me so many sleepless nights is believing in given circumstances .
As I have learned through my studies, b elieving in given circumstances combines different elements within the Konstantin Stanislavski method and is the essence of psychological theatre. The given circumstances describe the restraints of the scenic situation. But what does believe in mean? How can I make myself believe? While all the other parts of K. Stanislavski's method are like a handbook, a set of exact exercises and rules for learning acting, this is still a blurry and abstract term for me.
In 2019 I started my master’s degree studies at the Zurich University of the Arts. Though it is not connected to Konstantin Stanislavski's studies, aiming at performance arts in general, the opportunity to have a distance to my knowledge and the psychological theatre context back in Lithuania helps me to approach my professional knowledge from a different angle.
