The Master thesis considers how art institutions are increasingly positioning themselves in solidarity with social struggles and becoming sites for political expression. With the resurgence of activism and social movements in the last 10 years, protesting police brutality, racism, gender inequality, ecological crisis, immigration, and war, art institutions are employing a critical responsiveness to these concerns. Cynthia Stucki’s research explores this phenomenon through the discourse of museum activism. In consideration of this orientation, her research centers on the ongoing project of democratizing art institutions, their potential as affective infrastructures, and the relevance of relational engagement in exhibitions and programming. The Queens Museum in New York and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin are used as case studies to further reflect and propose activist curatorial practices. Sustainability and critical responsivity are two concluding perspectives that Cynthia Stucki considers as enduring qualities for a social impact and resonance of activist art institutions within their local and global contexts.

Was ist ein Naturmuseum? In seiner Masterarbeit untersucht Levyn Bürki Neukonzeptionen verschiedener Schweizer Naturmuseen in ihrer Entstehung. Anhand einer explorativen Quell- und Diskursanalyse, basierend auf Ausstellungsbesuchen, Projektskizzen und Gesprächen wird untersucht, wie an Naturmuseen Expertisen, Disziplinen und Wissenssysteme aufeinandertreffen und miteinander interagieren. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie sich aktuelle Diskurse aus Wissenschaftsvermittlung und repräsentationskritischer Ausstellungsvermittlung im Praxisdiskurs und in den Storyboards der geplanten Ausstellungen niederschlagen. Levyn Bürki macht sich auf die Suche nach einer Sprache für die eigene Auseinandersetzung mit dem Verhältnis zwischen Natur und Kultur, Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft, Zoolog:innen und Philosoph:innen, Lai:innen und Profis, Mensch und Rind, Vertrauen und Zweifel, Sprache und Stimme, Fiktion und Fakten. Und mittendrin: das Naturmuseum.

Seit Oktober 2021 belegt die Dauerleihgabe der Stiftung Sammlung E. G. Bührle rund ein Drittel der gesamten Ausstellungsfläche des Erweiterungsbaus im Kunsthaus Zürich. Mit dem Einzug in den Neubau geriet die Sammlungspräsentation und insbesondere der Dokumentationsraum, welcher die Privatsammlung des Waffenproduzenten und Kunstsammlers Emil Bührle in ihren historischen Kontext stellen soll, jedoch stark in die Kritik. Grundlegende Fragen im Umgang von Museen mit Kunst, die im Kontext von Nationalsozialismus und Flucht erworben wurde, stellen sich von Neuem. Vor diesem Hintergrund setzt sich die Masterthesis mit möglichen Strategien der Kontextualisierung von Kunst am Beispiel der Sammlung Bührle auseinander. Nach einer eingehenden Analyse der ausgestellten Sammlung Bührle untersucht Hannah Spillmann anhand ausgewählter Formen und Methoden, wie Kontext im Zeigen von Kunst sichtbar gemacht werden kann. Diese Ansätze sollen anregen, sich mit neuen Ausstellungsmöglichkeiten der Sammlung Bührle im Kunsthaus Zürich auseinanderzusetzen.

Wie lässt sich die Erfahrung von Performancekunst beschreiben und dokumentieren? Und was bedeutet das für eine kuratorische Praxis, die auf ein Momenterlebnis abzielt? Dandara Alves analysiert dazu die Ausstellung Moments, die im Jahr 2012 im ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien in Karlsruhe gezeigt wurde. Die als Live-Ausstellung konzipierte Schau stellt sich den eingangs genannten Herausforderungen und hat selbst den Versuch unternommen, ein Momenterlebnis zu schaffen. Dandara Alves hat den Begriff «Momenterlebnis», der den Moment in Bezug zur Analyse dieser Ausstellungspraxis untersucht und das Erlebnis dieses Moments in Bezug zur eigenen ästhetischen Erfahrung setzt, in ihrer Arbeit eingeführt und definiert. Ihre Untersuchung zeigt, dass sich das Momenterlebnis durch eine symbiotische Beziehung auszeichnet, die Moment und Erlebnis zusammenführt. Somit kann die Vollständigkeit von Performancekunst nur im Moment erfahren werden. Kunsterfahrung sollte daher zurück zum Moment der Begegnung finden – weg von herkömmlichen Ausstellungsformaten und hin zu dynamischeren Formaten, die der Performancekunst gerecht werden und die Besonderheit des Moments erlebbar machen.

- A paradigm shift is happening in exhibition making that centers the rethinking of the (para)curatorial, educational and the institutional. Exhibitions are leaving their traditional locations in museums to instead take place at festivals and in clubs, thus blurring the line between event and exhibition. In the view of this thesis, events taking place in alternative exhibition settings have the potential to be constructed as radical democratic spaces. This thesis explores art education and curating as practices that contribute towards breaking the conventions of how and where art is staged and mediated. Through both a literature review and case study analysis of three key events in alternative exhibition settings, practices that act on and influence democratic processes are examined. The central concluding argument is that hybrid curatorial and educational practices create space for transformation, negotiation, community-building, and potentially inclusive and democratic futures through the generation of alternative forms of knowledge, exchange and participation.

Kunst wird zumeist in Städten gemacht und gezeigt. Das Dorf ist in den aktuellen Diskursen selten präsent. Mehrere Projekte zeugen jedoch von originellen Aktivitäten in kleinen ländlichen Gemeinden. Seit über 20 Jahren haben Kurator:innen Ausstellungsprojekte realisiert, die man an einem solchen Ort nicht erwarten würde. Die Masterthesis von Lorenzo Metzler widmet sich diesem noch wenig beachteten Themenfeld und somit den Fragen: Wie kann man eine Ausstellung oder ein thematisches Projekt in einem dörflichen Kontext realisieren? Wie können bestimmte Themen und Konzepte der zeitgenössischen Kunst an ein Publikum vermittelt werden, das mit künstlerischen Praxisformen nicht vertraut ist? Ausgangslage für die Untersuchung waren Interviews mit drei unterschiedlichen Akteur:innen von Schweizer Ausstellungsprojekten in dörflichen Kontexten. Auf der Basis der Analyse und Recherche entstand ein eigenes Ausstellungskonzept. Die thematische Ausstellung «Die unterbrochene Reise», die von Juni bis August 2022 im Dorf Unterägeri stattfinden wird, untersucht anhand internationaler künstlerischer Positionen die Frage des Reisens und der Reiseästhetik.

- Der Parkplatz von Herkulaneum, irgendwann zwischen 44 v.Chr. und 2022 n.Chr. Nach der Besichtigung der Ausgrabungsstätte begibt sich die Reisegruppe des Altersheims Mathysweg zurück in ihren Reisebus. Beim Rückwärtsfahren rammt der Bus einen historischen Pfeiler der Siedlung, auf mysteriöse Weise fällt der Bus auf die Seite, die Säule zerspringt in Einzelteile. Der Bus räukelt, die Situation ist prekär, zum Glück ist niemand verletzt. Man vergewissert sich über Anwesenheiten und diverse sonstige Dinge, die alte Menschen halt so tun, wenn sie grad nichts zu tun haben. Worüber kann man sich denn so unterhalten? Über’s Wetter zum Beispiel. Oder die schlimme Situation, in der der Bus gerade steckt. Oder man zeigt sich die Fotos, die man gemacht hat. Oder jene, von zu Hause, da wo man eigentlich gerade lieber sein möchte. Manchmal muss man aufstehen. Manchmal muss man hinsitzen. Manchmal muss man den Rollator nehmen, um sich fortzubewegen. Alles in allem ein sehr bewegtes Bild.

Die produktive Nutzung virtueller Kommunikationskanäle und ihr Zusammenspiel mit der Vermittlung vor Ort zählt zu den drängenden Fragen der aktuellen Vermittlungspraxis in Ausstellungen und Museen. Emanuela Ring hat für ihre Masterthesis ein umfangreiches Vermittlungsprojekt im Musée Visionnaire und im Helmhaus Zürich durchgeführt, das die Unterschiede und Verknüpfungsmöglichkeiten von Vermittlung auf Distanz und vor Ort im Museumsraum erkundet. Dazu hat sie verschiedene Medientechnologien in beiden Institutionen ausprobiert und mit einem Aktionsforschungsdesign begleitend untersucht und ausgewertet. Beispielsweise hat sie Online-Rundgänge mit vorproduzierten Videos für Schulklassen angeboten. Die Videos wurden von einer Lehrperson im Klassenzimmer gezeigt und die Schüler:innen konnten mit dem Online-Chat-Tool Padlet auf das Video reagieren. Die multimedialen Ansätze haben es Emanuela Ring überhaupt erst ermöglicht, ihr Vermittlungsprojekt Anfang 2021, mitten in der Pandemie, unter Beteiligung mehrerer Schulen durchzuführen. In ihrer Auswertung zeigt sich, dass virtuelle Kommunikationskanäle nicht automatisch zu mehr Partizipation führen. Das Virtuelle bezieht sich letztlich doch auf den physischen Ort der Institution. Aus ihrer Sicht sollten die digitalen Formate genutzt werden, um Interesse bei den Teilnehmer:innen zu wecken, ein Museum zu besuchen und die Dinge vor Ort zu betrachten.

- Through my work within the format of multichannel sound-installations, I always felt the need to preserve ephemeral works in a recorded form for archiving purposes and to showcase my work to curators, art institutions, and the general public. The attempt to preserve ephemeral sonic work raises two questions: How do I translate a multichannel audio-work into a recorded form without losing the spatial properties? And how do I make such audio-work accessible without immense technical equipment? This paper will examine different spatial audio recording and reproduction techniques to obtain a sufficient method that can preserve and playback ephemeral work with a spatial component.
The conversion of multichannel sound-installations into a recorded form also raised questions related to sound and media art theory, i.e. how does the recorded version relate to the original version – is it still the same piece of work? Preceded by a case study on archiving ephemeral sonic work, I explore in the last segment of this thesis three creative principles of preserving ephemeral work based on my eight channel sound-installation Candid III. These three different methods will be examined and evaluated with regard to their abilities to accurately capture the spatial properties of Candid III. My research in experimenting with binaural formats aims toward making sonically immersive work more easily and authentically accessible. Further, it could also be of use in the context of cultural institutions that are confronted with similar problems when dealing with ephemeral sonic works containing spatial
components.

Die Tour de France braust über schneefrei Pässe, Bruno Latour sagt die Klimakrise ab und die Städte vermelden eine höhere Biodiversität als die Kulturlandschaft. Als Francesco Petrarca 1335 den Mont Ventoux bestieg, wurde er zum ersten Alpinisten. Heute haken wir auf unserer Bucket List ab: been there, done that.
Was wollen wir eigentlich von der Natur, die uns zwischen den Fingern zerrinnt? Und was wollen wir von uns, die Kultur mit Natur verwechseln und dabei nach Erholung lechzen?
Kein Theater – eine Bergwanderung. Wer da noch mehr will, als die Aussicht geniessen, soll das Buch lesen.
Ausrüstung: Bergtaugliche Schuhe, Regenjacke, eigene Trinkflasche. Wir werden ungefähr anderthalb Stunden zu Fuss unterwegs sein.

- Eine Kollaboration mit Lukas Bärfuss und dem Fachbereich Kulturpublizistik der ZHdK –
Dreizehn Kulturpublizistik-Studierende befragten gemeinsam mit Lukas Bärfuss das Verhältnis zwischen Bild und Text – historisch, phänomenologisch und vor allem praktisch. Die Ausstellung in der Coalmine – Raum für Fotografie in Winterthur ist eine mehrstimmige Dokumentation dieses Arbeitsprozesses. Vor allem ist sie eine Einladung sich in den Fragen, Erkenntnissen und Visualisierungen der Beteiligten zu vertiefen und sich zu inspirieren.
Die Vernissage findet statt am 2. Juni um 18.30 Uhr in der Coalmine Winterthur, Turnerstrasse 1, 8401 Winterthur

- «Glossar der Planlosigkeit» heisst die Publikation der Studierenden des MA Kulturpublizistik-Jahrgangs 2020. Darin gehts um verpasste Flüge, Nächte im Moonliner & Reisen ohne bekanntes Ziel. Elf Studierende haben geschrieben, konzipiert, redigiert und Gäste eingeladen. Nach eineinhalb Jahren findet das Projekt im Mai 2022 sein Ende – jedes Exemplar ist ein Einzelstück, das von einem Algorithmus kuratiert wurde.
