In der Zeit zwischen Ende 1839 und Anfang 1840 entschloss sich Richard Wagner, nach dem Vorbild der «Roméo et Juliette»-Symphonie von Hector Berlioz eine Sinfonie über den Fauststoff zu schreiben. Die Komposition ging jedoch nicht über den ersten Satz, der Fausts Einsamkeit in seinem Studierzimmer schildert, sowie Skizzen zum zweiten Satz «Gretchen» hinaus; aus dem vollendeten ersten Satz wurde schliesslich die Faust-Ouvertüre.
Zur Zeit der Kompostion der «Nuits d’été» befand sich Hector Berlioz in einer schwierigen Phase seines Lebens: Seine erste Ehe war gescheitert. Der 1840 auf Texte seines Dichterfreundes Théophile Gautier komponierte Zyklus war ursprünglich für Mezzosopran und Klavier geschrieben; später hat ihn Berlioz orchestriert.
Die Uraufführung der Sinfonie in d-Moll von César Franck fand 1889 bei der Societé des Concerts du Conservatoire in Paris statt und hatte eine gemischte Aufnahme. Gounods bekannter Bemerkung, in dieser Sinfonie würde die Inkompetenz zu dogmatischen Längen geführt, stand die Überraschung gegenüber, dass Debussy sich durchaus positiv äusserte. Das Werk hat die für eine Sinfonie ungewöhnliche Struktur von drei Sätzen, wobei Allegretto und Scherzo in genialer Manier zum zweiten Satz zusammengefasst sind.

Die eher selten aufgeführte Oper „Radamisto“ schrieb Georg Friedrich Händel für die neu gegründete Londoner Royal Academy of Music. Sie wurde am Londoner King’s Theatre 1720 uraufgeführt. Die Oper handelt sowohl von der Macht der ehelichen Liebe, als auch von Treue und Widerstand gegenüber einem Tyrannen. Kampf, Intrigen und Verrat enden in Läuterung, welche anstelle von Rache vor allem Grossmut entgegensetzt.
