- Der 19-jährige Ehsanullah ist aus Afghanistan geflüchtet und kam mit dem Schlauchboot übers Meer und zu Fuss über die Berge. Die albanischen Geschwister Nazljie und Ismail wiederum verliessen ihr Land nach dem Tod ihrer Mutter und wurden bei Verwandten aufgenommen. Zusammen mit anderen Jugendlichen aus aller Herren Länder finden sie sich in der Integrationsklasse von Herrn Zingg in Basel wieder und sollen innerhalb von zwei Jahren Sprache und Kultur der Schweiz kennen lernen. Sie alle hoffen, ihre harte Vergangenheit und die teils traumatischen Schicksals-schläge hinter sich zu lassen und in der Schweiz ihre Träume leben zu können. Aber der Weg ist steinig und im fremden Land einen beruflichen Einstieg zu finden, wird nicht allen gelingen. Darüber macht sich Herr Zingg keine Illusionen und wird gleichwohl nicht müde, den Migrantinnen und Migranten den Glauben an sich selber und eine bessere Zukunft zu lehren. Aber je näher das Ende der zweijährigen Ausbildung rückt, desto drängender wird die Frage, ob es denn überhaupt einen Platz für sie gibt im neuen Land.
Beobachtend und einfühlsam zeigt NEULAND die Realität der jungen Menschen in der für sie so fremden Kultur und wirft damit ein ungewohntes Schlaglicht auf unsere globalisierte und kriegerische Welt.
The 19-year-old Ehsanullah fled from Afghanistan and crossed the seas in an inflatable boat and the mountains on foot. The Albanian siblings Nazljie and Ismail, on the other hand, left their country after the death of their mother and were taken in by relatives. Together with other young people from around the world, they met in the integration class taught by Mr. Zingg in Basel where they are expected to learn the language and culture of Switzerland within two years. All of them want to leave their distressful past and their in some cases very hard strokes of fate behind them and hope to be able to live their dreams in the new country. But it‘s not an easy path and not all of them will be able to find a job. Mr. Zingg doesn’t delude himself about this, but he still never tires of teaching the migrants to believe in themselves and in a better future. But the closer they get to the end of their two-year schooling, the more pressing the question as to whether there is a place for them at all in Switzerland.
UNKNOWN TERRITORY observes and shows the reality of the young people sensitively in a culture that is so strange to them, throwing an unaccustomed spotlight on our globalised and war-torn world.
