- Alles – gleichzeitig: Das schmelzende Eis vor Grönland, das Ergrünen der Sahara, der
tauende Permafrost in Sibirien, der chaotische Rhythmus des Monsuns im indischen
Meer, das Ahrtal, die Bienen, die Weissweinfelder auf Rügen. Die Krise ist nicht mehr
zu übersehen, wir müssen sie nicht einmal beim Namen nennen. So leben wir.
Trotz allem: Es bleibt eine Krise des Anderen, der Natur, die Krise einer Sphäre, die
abgetrennt ist von der Kultur menschlichen Lebens, deren Verlust begriffen, aber
doch nicht mit dem eigenen Leben in Verbindung gebracht wird. Kultur und Natur:
immer noch zwei Welten. Natur, das ist vielleicht etwas Schützenswertes,
Erhabenes, hat Seltenheitswert, eignet sich für Ausflüge – und bleibt darin doch stets
ein Objekt. In dieser grössten Lüge liegt vielleicht verborgen, warum so
unbegreiflich ist, was eigentlich geschieht, wenn Kipppunkte erreicht werden, die
Bäume der Städte verdorren und wochenlang Sommerhitze Humus zu unwirtlichem
Dreck erstarren lässt: Es ist der eigene Tod, der Tod von Menschen – ein nicht mehr
blühender Kirschbaum ist nichts anderes als das eigene, eingehende Leben. Ist es
doch schliesslich eine Lüge der Unverbundenheit. Die Wahrheit ist der Stoffwechsel,
in der Schule gelernt, der Austausch von Materie zwischen allen Arten, das
Verspeisen eines Apfels und irgendwann die Rückführung des Verdauten in einen
globalbiologischen Kreislauf. In Wahrheit befindet sich alles im Austausch, in
subjektiver Resonanz und die Vorstellung, aus dem Nicht-Menschlichen Objekte der
Unterwerfung zu machen, dient nur ihrer Warenförmigkeit. Mit der ironischen
Kosequenz, dass diese Warenförmigkeit zuguterletzt das System zerstört, das sie
erfunden hat. Erst, wenn das, was Natur ist, kein Ding mehr, sondern als Teil des
Eigenen begriffen wird, wird deutlich, was auf dem Spiel steht. Und ja – es steht
schon jetzt auf dem Spiel. Ist die Aufrechterhaltung der Trennung doch ein Privileg
derjenigen, die den eigenen Tod noch nicht erlebt haben.

KOMPOSITORISCHE FORMEN IN DRAMATURGISCHEN PROZESSEN

- Die Idee, kompositorische Figuren in dramaturgische Prozesse einfliessen zu lassen, hat zeitgleich mit meiner Bewerbung für den Master in Dramaturgie an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste begonnen. Jedoch kann ich nicht behaupten, dass es eine aktive Entscheidung war, die ich zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt
getroffen hätte, viel eher hat sich dies in mein Schaffen über die Jahre ausgewirkt. In vielen Gesprächen die ich hatte, neben der praktischen Arbeit oder dem Sitzen in Seminaren, war ich immer wieder dazu gezwungen, mein Schaffen zu beschreiben und die Verbindung meines Masterstudiums zu meinem Bachelor in Zeitgenössischer Komposition zu reflektieren.
Die einfache Beschreibung ist, dass ich während meinem Bachelor viel Theatermusik gemacht habe.
Dabei habe ich gemerkt, dass Musiker:innen oft erst sehr spät in Prozessen zugezogen werden. Da sagt dann die Regie «wir haben eine traurige Szene, könntest du eine traurige Musik machen?» und das geht dann natürlich auch. Auch wenn diese Situation allenfalls etwas überspitzt dargestellt ist, kann ich mit Sicherheit
sagen, dass mich dieser Aspekt der Arbeit weniger interessiert. Ich möchte versuchen, das Theater als kollektiven Prozess zu denken und die Musik von Anfang an miteinzubeziehen.
Der Master in Dramaturgie hat mir diesbezüglich sehr viel ermöglicht, weil ich als Dramaturg oft von Beginn einer Denkarbeit in einem Prozess dabei sein kann. Oftmals habe ich die Möglichkeit mit Regisseur:innen die Doppelrolle als Musiker/Dramaturg zu besetzen und dann in die Musik schon in die Konzeption einfliessen zu lassen, statt nur Szenen zu untermalen. Und das sehe ich mittlerweile, nach sieben Jahren an der ZHdK als den Beitrag, den ich in einem Theaterprozess beisteuern kann.

- Revisiting Antonin Artaud’s “Theater of Cruelty (First Manifesto)”

- While developing my graduation piece at the ZHdK I was prompted to revisit the “Theatre and its Double” by Antonin Artaud, as a theoretical point of reflexion. The “Theatre of Cruelty (First Manifesto)” in “Theatre and its Double” struck really close to the concept, ideas, and form which I was trying to establish with my work. It felt natural to use it as a building block in my thesis.
The idea to revisit and rewrite the Manifesto came soon after. Of course this had to be done in such a way, that it not only looks directly into my practice, but also gives a broader view on what would it mean for the “Theatre of Cruelty Manifesto” if it was written in 2023 with the specifics of its new time.
I must admit, due to my background in Fine Arts I am a person that is drawn to material and matter. Perhaps this is exactly what drew me to Artaud’s Manifesto – he isn’t too theoretical about it, as opposed to other chapters in his book. Of course that has also to do with the Manifesto as a Manifesto, it is intended as something that could be instantly practically applied.
However given that it was written in 1932, it is rather obvious that among others terms such as Stage, Actor and Puppet nowadays have an even broader meaning than they did during Artaud’s time.
Theatre has undergone an immense metamorphosis in recent times: what we understand as theatre, what we practise, the stories we tell and the ways in which we tell them. Material has evolved as well. Our sensory skills are different. Terms such as trigger and response, have many connotations. Various boundaries (in whichever aspect) have been continuously tested and redefined.

more than a gaze

- embodied dramaturgical practice informed by the feminist gaze

- To answer the core question of this thesis: “How can the feminist gaze be used as a tool for
dramaturgical practice?”, I will take the following steps: First, I will problematize the anxieties
surrounding the role of the dramaturg as an agent of cohesion and overview who is invisible
and flexible. To do this, I will lean heavily on the theoretical work of Myriam Van Imschoot
and other influential dramaturgs. I then look at theories of the gaze in the performing arts
and bring them in connection to patriarchal oppressive hierarchies through the investigation
of the male gaze, female gaze and feminist gaze. Here, I draw on Adam Czirak’s work on
the gaze in the performing arts and on the film directors Laura Mulvey and Joey Soloway, for
the male, female and feminist gaze. These theories of the gaze bring me to looking at the
gaze as an embodied concept, and consequently point me in the direction of embodied
dramaturgy as a feminist dramaturgical practice. In the third part of the thesis, I adopt a more
speculative approach using practical and theoretical writing as well as excerpts of
conversations I had with peers as sources, weaving all the different materials together to
investigate the feminist potential of embodied dramaturgical practice. The research for this
thesis is based on academic methodology and more speculative writing. I invite you to read
this thesis as the result of a making-process with intense research and much dramaturgical
thinking.
