Nachdem mit der Ausstellung „Dada New York I: Preparation for a Miracle“ die ganze Bandbreite von Dada New York aufgezeigt und untersucht wurde und mit „Dada New York II: The Revolution to Smash Global Capitalism“ die Zukunft der Kunst, wie sie Picabia und Duchamp vor gut 100 Jahren in New York prophezeiten, präsentiert worden ist, widmen wir uns nun mit der Ausstellung „Dada New York III: The Metaphysics of Sitting“ einer Facette von Dada New York, die der grossen Innovation der Readymades und Maschinenzeichnungen ihren Grund gab. Nur Man Ray, der einzige gebürtige Amerikaner in der Dada New York Gruppe, wagte es in einem Interview eben diesen Grund zu benennen: Die Suche nach einer metaphysischen Dimension von Dingen.
Studierende der Bildenden Kunst, Fotografie, Medialen Künste und Theorie der ZHdK haben sich in einem Modul des Departements Kunst & Medien eingehend mit Dada New York auseinandergesetzt und sich dieser metaphysischen Dimension angenähert. Ähnlich wie Man Ray versuchten sie diese Dimension in alltäglichen Gegenständen zu finden.
Die angehenden Künstler, Fotografen und Vermittler haben sich sehr unbefangen mit der Metaphysik beschäftigt und diese um den Begriff des „Sitting“ erweitert. So entstehen Bezüge zu „Sitting“ im Sinne von Modellsitzen für ein Portrait, was ein Verbindung zur Fotografie und ihrer frühen Technik herstellt, bei der man sich gezwungen sah, lange Zeit still zu sitzen, um am Ende ein brauchbares Produkt zu erhalten. Damals war dieses Stillsitzen, um ein Bild von sich zu erhalten, ein magisches, um nicht zu sagen metaphysisches Erlebnis. Über die Fotografie besteht auch ein Bezug zu Alfred Stieglitz, der in New York Fotografie zu Kunst machte und damit auch das Bild der Dadaisten in New York stark prägte. Weiter kann „Sitting“ auch auf eine Setzung hinweisen, etwas, das man setzt, aber auch etwas, das sich setzt, wie z.B. das Bild in der frühen Fototechnik. Eine Setzung ist immer auch eine Behauptung, so wie Dada. Dada ist eine Behauptung. Eine Setzung. Und damit auch eine Wagnis, ein Exponieren. Natürlich verweist „Sitting“ auch auf das französische „Séance“, welches wir vor allem für spiritistisch mediale Sitzungen benutzen, die in einzelnen Arbeiten, aber vor allem in der Para-Dada Veranstaltungsreihe, auftaucht.
Oder ganz einfach: Es ist doch sehr bemerkenswert, dass sich eine Gruppe von 23 sehr individuellen, jungen Künstlern und Vermittlern mit Dada beschäftigt und sich dabei der Metaphysik von Alltagsdingen widmet und nicht der Verführung des Klischée der Provokation und der Groteske verfällt, wie es bei Dada oft der Fall ist. Man könnte gar so weit gehen und darin einen Trend sehen, der auf eine Zukunft nicht nur der Kunst, sondern der Menschheit verweist.
Die Ausstellung ist eine Zusammenarbeit von Cabaret Voltaire und ZHDK BA MEDIEN & KUNST.
