HEIMliche Treppen im Toni

- Ausgehend von den sehr unterschiedlichen Arten von Treppenhäusern und deren Atmosphären stellte ich mir die Frage, ob ein Gebäude infolge einer Instrumentalisierung selber zum handelnden Subjekt werden könnte. Das Toni-Areal besteht aus einer öffentlich klar lesbaren Erschliessung und aus vielen labyrinthartigen kleineren (un)HEIMliche(re)n Gängen und Treppenhäusern. Einige sind Fluchtwege, andere nicht oder mutieren irgendwann im Verlauf(en). Das deutsche Wort "Heimlich" ist doppeldeutig: Einerseits steckt das Wort HEIM darin, welches "heimelig"/"vertraut" bedeuten kann, andererseits kann mit heimlich auch "versteckt"/"verborgen" gemeint sein. Was passiert mit diesen Kippfiguren, bei denen unklar ist, ob man in einem Raum oder ausserhalb (analog der Klein'schen Flasche) ist? Ist das Gebäude Objekt oder Subjekt? Schafft das Sicherheitsdispositiv Sicherheit oder Angst? Ist es heimelig, heimlich oder unheimlich?
Mit meiner praktischen Arbeit versuche ich die 21 mir unheimlichen Treppenhäuser mit Nutzungsänderungen anders zu besetzen. Was ist, wenn man in einem engen, grauen Treppenhaus ohne Fenster, wo man nie sicher ist, ob man trotz Badge wieder einen Ausweg findet, auf etwas Unerwartetes trifft? Auf Gegenstände, Nutzungen oder Personen, die man an diesem Ort nicht vermuten würde? Verändert dies etwas? Welche Spuren davon bleiben real oder in der Erinnerung zurück? Dazu gibt es im November 2015 in den Treppenhäusern 21 Interventionen, welche Spuren hinterlassen...

- My project explores what the concept of belonging means to me, and how my personal definition of home has changed. It thus explores how multiple places, with their own specific identities, can develop into a personal space that bridges the gap in-between. The geographical displacement between, for instance, Zurich and Isfahan stands in contrast to their presence in memory, creating a mixed, hybrid identity. Though it’s impossible to be in two places at once, memories of somewhere else can produce a counterpoint to the physical space in which one finds one’s self. This raises several questions about how memory functions, and how memories will be preserved.
My interest in this topic stems from the sense of loss or belonging that I felt when I moved to Zurich from Isfahan two years ago. My work seeks to respond to that experience through artistic means and asks: How do I create a sense of belonging in different situations? How do I create personal spaces?
I work with elements from my current surroundings and with a retrospective look at my former surroundings to examine how they combine and how they influence and comment on one another. Some of these elements include sounds connected to the most important moments in my life, others deal with displacements, intertwining distance and closeness in the experience of a migrant. The theoretical works of Yi-Fu Tuan, Denys Johnson-Davies, and Edward Relph have helped me to understand and reflect on concepts like space and place, the meaning of home, the sense of belonging, and the life in-between.

- Der Ausgangspunkt von “The voice from a silent body” ist eine schlichte Faszination für die Gebärdensprache. Diese lässt sich aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven untersuchen: Aus choreografischer Perspektive zeigt die Gebärdensprache auf, wie durch Strukturierung von abstrakter Bewegung Bedeutung entstehen kann. Die vierdimensionale Erscheinung der Gebärdensprache wiederum setzt für die Lesbarkeit und Produktion der Sprache Differenzierungen von simultanen, feinmotorischen Mechanismen voraus. Als Drittes rückt in der Anwendung der Gebärdensprache die direkte Kommunikation in den Vordergrund. Um sich diesen drei Perspektiven anzunähern, wird in der Arbeit die Gebärdensprache aus zwei unterschiedlichen Perspektiven untersucht, derjenigen der Sprachwissenschaftler/innen und derjenigen der Anwender/innen. Ein direkter Kontakt mit Vertretern der beiden Perspektiven ermöglicht ein experimentelles Setting aus Versuchsanordnungen, die den Dialog in eine künstlerische Praxis überführen sollen. Textliche Beschreibungen und Abbildungen der Gebärdensprache lassen eine Wechselwirkung zwischen Bild, Sprache und Bewegung entstehen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Aufmerksamkeit durch eine ästhetisch-künstlerische Form auf die alltägliche Kommunikation zu lenken und Fragen an die Performativität von Sprache und die Lesbarkeit von Bewegung zu stellen.

Towards Understanding the Music-Curatorial

- The goal of this Master’s project is to investigate the relationship between context and content through methods of the curatorial, focusing on the discipline of music. My research thematizes the double effect that exists between these two elements, which in turn raises questions of how to understand the role of the audience, the definition of the author, and the relationship between artistic and non-artistic production by various both human and non-human subjects.
As contemporary music moves slowly toward composing with extra-musical factors such as video clips or choreographed gestures, my research seeks to reflect on and participate in this development not from the perspective of the composer, but rather from the less artistic and more philosophical position of the curator, a figure that has in the past several years accompanied similar artistic shifts in other art forms towards theatricality, individualization, and self-reflexivity.
This project, which can be called music curating, investigates these issues through both theoretical texts and musical-curatorial projects. In every instance, my work also thematizes the question of a working methodology situated between various actors often possessing very diverse skills and backgrounds, a topic that deals directly with interdiscursive relations.

- I am totally intrigued by the idea of creating space that extends from the inside out. Learning through our own body, a body that moves, feels, and dreams. Designed from the body with its aspirations and needs. Being a fashion designer, I see clothing as an extension of our skin or body. Clothing further extended becomes an individual architecture. It is our outside while it also reflects our inside, albeit most privately. As we move around in public spaces with their individualized clothing or “architecture,” we are confronted with various cultural, social, and political issues. I am interested in exploring the blurring lines between the private and public in the context of these “wearable identities.” I am interested in using conventional and new materials together with the latest technology to create new interactions between the individuals or groups within a society. As in an imaginative world of a small child, certain spaces can be thought of as popping-up whenever one needs them. Thereafter, they are no longer visible. The idea is to envision a space with elements that combine our visual, hearing, and tactile senses so that the space is responsive to its users and has a playful character, and thereby allows its users to explore the surrounding space and thereby find their own space of retreat.
I approached these questions by creating various scenarios of future spaces inside and outside, in private and public spaces. When developing these scenarios, it helps to look at the status quo of existing public spaces and workspaces, for example. How much freedom of thought, how much relaxation do these spaces provide? Creating such scenarios, it might be possible to influence certain elements while creating such spaces. Such scenarios could be used to develop further design solutions to these issues.

Hanging, Grooving, and Strolling: Potential Interrelations and Transdisciplinary Thinking in the Arts

- My work is about modes of being a spectator and modes of making spaces for relations and thinking in the performer-spectator-community of today. It is about looking at the potential and importance of this community across various disciplines and categorizations. During my Master‘s, I have created a series of artistic laboratories and events in order to investigate different modes for the spectator to be and think in the live event, rather than to talk about participation and interaction. This also involves investigating modes of production inside and around, but that are not necessarily restricted to, the institution of the performing arts. My investigations have led to the three modalities of hanging, grooving, and strolling, which point to a social and durational way of spectating. My work reflects on a discourse on the politics of perception and on the role of the spectator in an event, linking to the works of various artists and writers, such as Mårten Spångberg, Jaques Rancière, and Henri Lefebre. My work is closely related to contemporary culture and society and an ongoing change of spectating and producing space in the multi-tasking, hyper-technological stage of interactions, while still adressing the potential and importance of the gathering of spectators and performers in the live-event.

- Die exponentielle Entwicklung der Leistungsgesellschaft und deren verführerische Reize erachten Viele als fortschrittlich. Doch das Tun steht unter dem Diktat von Effizienz und Optimierung. Die Webpage NICHTStun.net hinterfragt diese Tendenz und bildet in einem wachsenden Konstrukt Entwürfe für das Nichtstun.
Im Nachdenken über das Nichtstun werden sowohl das Tun als auch das Nichts berücksichtigt und vielschichtig interpretiert. Die Webseite versammelt Projekte und Reflexionen zum Nichtstun und erkundet Spannungsfelder zwischen dem Tun und dem Nichts. Es entsteht ein Geflecht mit Zweigungen, Kreuzungen und Knüpfungen. Das Geflecht kann wachsen, erzeugen, entwickeln, bilden, negieren, zerstören oder kollabieren. Das Nichtstun selbst ist Inhalt und Methode, Programm und Prozess.
Die damit verbundenen Aktionen oder Nichtaktionen können alle medialen Bereiche, Formate und Disziplinen involvieren. Sie tangieren viele soziale und kulturelle Sinndimensionen und führen im besten Fall zu öffentlichen Debatten und Diskursen.

Literaturinszenierung: Lesung als Performance

- «Es ist der Drang, der uns überhaupt zum Lesen bringt: zu hören, wie die Geschichte der Welt sich anhört, wenn ein anderer sie erzählt.» (Richard Powers)
Literarische Lesungen entfernen sich zunehmend von der klassischen Idee einer Veranstaltung, bei der ein Autor vor sich hinmurmelnd an einem Tisch sitzt und an einem Wasserglas nippt. Stattdessen schlagen Veranstaltungen wie die «LitCologne», das «Tübinger Buchfest» oder die «Prosanova» eine explizit erlebnisorientierte Richtung ein. «Lesungen gehören inszeniert» verlangte 2004 Thomas Böhm, der Programmleiter des Kölner Literaturhauses gegenüber der Wiener Zeitung. Der Leser soll zum Zuschauer werden. Aber wieviel «Schau» braucht die Literatur? Und welche neue Rolle kommt dabei dem Schriftsteller zu?
In meiner Masterarbeit beschäfitge ich mich mit solchen Fragen und möchte Potentiale, aber auch Grenzen austesten, die das Vorlesen von Literatur haben kann. Grundlage dafür bieten Texte aus meinem Roman «Runa», der im September 2015 im Limes-Verlag erscheint und in dem ich die historischen Hintergründe der Hirnforschung mit einer fiktiven Geschichte verwebe.
Konkret erzählt «Runa» von dem Schweizer Medizinstudenten Jori Hell, der Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts an der Pariser Salpêtrière den ersten psychochirurgischen Eingriff der Geschichte planen will. Die neuesten Erkenntnisse über das Gehirn und seine Funktionen haben zu jener Zeit eine wahre Euphorie über die Bedeutung dieser zuvor unergründlichen, teigartigen Masse in unserem Schädel ausgelöst. Lokalisationstheorien wurden aufgestellt, mit denen man versuchte, menschliche Eigenschaften, Körperfunktionen und Störungen in den verschiedenen Bereichen des Gehirns zu verorten. Und die logische Konsequenz war, dass man das, worauf man den Finger legen konnte, auch ärztlich behandeln konnte – zum Beispiel indem man den Patienten das (vermutete) Zentrum für emotionale Erregung aus dem Gehirn schnitt.

- New flower is a web-documentary project, an online platform that introduces critical voices about the accelerating urbanization of the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. -Helen, Mihret, and Mulugeta are three local artists with different personal relationships with, and therefore diverse thoughts about, the making of the ‘New -Capital of Africa’. And yet their voices all resonate with their deep concerns about the idea of ‘modernization’. This project challenges both the Ethio-pian and the Western concepts of development.

- Raum gilt seit gut hundert Jahren als zentraler Begriff der Architektur. In und durch Architektur wird Raum erfahrbar. Nicht selten wird die gesamte Architektur über ihre raumschaffende Aufgabe definiert, dennoch ist Raum nicht schlechthin das Medium der Architektur. Der Raumbegriff ist mit vielen und sehr allgemeinen Bedeutungen aufgeladen, die für die Architektur selber nicht spezifisch sind. Raum ist ein totalisierendes Wort, welches aufgrund seiner Resonanz in allen Disziplinen bedeutungsvoll erscheint – aber ohne konkrete Bedeutung eine genaue Anwendung eher erschwert als ermöglicht. Zahlreiche aktuelle sowie historische Möglichkeiten, Raum zu denken und zu interpretieren treffen heute aufeinander.
Seit einigen Jahren wird im Zusammenhang vom Raum zudem von einem «spatial turn», von einer Wende, gesprochen. Im Zuge dieser topologischen Wende wird der Raumbegriff in verschiedenen Disziplinen neu ausgelotet und ausdifferenziert. Gemeinsam ist den damit verbundenen Diskursen, dass dem Raum wieder und vermehrt eine Bedeutung zugeführt wird.
Diese Arbeit möchte genau an diesem Punkt anknüpfen. Sie folgt dem Wechsel von disziplinären Raumdiskursen hin zu einem Rekurs auf ein transdisziplinäres Raumparadigma. Ausgehend von seiner architektonischen Perspektive werden in der Anwendung die räumlichen Praxen ästhetischer und künstlerischer Disziplinen untersucht. In methodischer Hinsicht geschieht dies durch teilnehmende Beobachtung und durch die Aneignung unterschiedlicher Formate und Arbeitsweisen. Theoretische Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Raum und unterschiedliche konzeptionnelle Blickweisen ergänzen diesen Zugang.

- Die Arbeit «mb al lb r 5144798 – The Stuff Between» setzt sich mit dem erkennt-nisbringenden Einsatz von Entwurfstechniken auseinander. Es geht um die Suche nach Anknüpfungspunkten für das Kommunikationsdesign an den Wissenskulturen. Dazu findet eine ethnografische Studie über Biologen bei ihrer Feldarbeit statt. Aufgrund ihres auffälligen Einsatzes von Entwurfstechniken bei der Beobachtung im Feld werden die Forscher in dieser Arbeit als Designer betrachtet. Es wird die Frage gestellt: «Sind Biologen die besseren Designer?» Ziel ist es, ausgehend von dieser Hypothese Parallelen und Divergenzen in den Arbeitsprozessen, die scheinbar höchst unterschiedliche Ergebnisse hervorbringen, zu evaluieren. Dabei wird davon ausgegangen, dass Designforschung und Biologie voneinander lernen können. Diese Vermutung basiert auf zwei beobachteten Gemeinsamkeiten: Dem Einsatz der gleichen Aufzeichnungstechniken und der Konfrontation mit dem selben Problem, Phänomene der Welt in etwas anderes übersetzen zu müssen.
Das Projekt behandelt ein Beispiel des Einsatzes von Entwurfstechniken in wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen. Diese können in anderen Beispielen völlig anders eingesetzt werden. Es geht daher nicht um eine allgemein gültige Aussage über deren Einsatz. Ziel ist es Möglichkeiten zu finden, wie das Design die selben, ihm vertrauten Techniken produktiv einsetzen könnte, um ebenfalls durch wissenschaftliches Arbeiten, Wissen und Unwissen aufzudecken.
