Description | - Praktikum, Blockwoche für den Vorkurs der Berufsschule für Gestaltung Medien Form Farbe

Description in English | - Internship, block week for the introductory course of the Medien Form Farbe (media, form, colour) vocational school
Vicenza, capital of the province of the same name, is located on the road between Venice and Milan on the Po river plain. The city is a Unesco world heritage site, and famed for its renaissance architecture, most clearly defined by the work of Andrea Palladio. Piazza dei Signori, Teatro Olimpico, Monte Berico and Villa Rotonda are all familiar sightseeing attractions, the stuff of endless anecdotes recounted by tour guides. But what lies hidden in the corners of Vicenza, away from the great city squares? Where are the little details that transform a city into a truly fascinating environment?
The www.sketchvicenza.com website seeks them out. Introductory course students took an artistic approach towards investigating the typology of the city. Their observations, discoveries, interpretations and stories provided the basis for a new city blog.
The students walked through the various city districts in groups, sketching the corners and squares in postcard format. For five days, their gaze ranged over the city, as they assimilated it with all five senses, looking for both the striking and the unspectacular, the banal and the extraordinary.
The central aspect of their brief was through their perceptions to arrive at an interpretation of the city, which was supplemented, caricatured, exaggerated, reordered and metamorphosed along the way. The objective was to learn to create the portrait of a place by training their perceptions and engagement with formal and thematic aspects. A range of procedural and contextual inputs was used to make the young adults more receptive and sensitive towards their perceptions of the typology of the city. They were also given technical advice and tasks with a view to maintaining a coherent, overall concept for the website.
