«Arc-en-ciel» enthebt uns der chronometrischen Zeit und entführt uns aus dem Hier und Jetzt in fantastische Welten.
Zeitgenössische Werke stehen im Zentrum dieses ZHdK-Ensembles, in dem namhafte Dirigent:innen mit Studierenden Konzertaufführungen erarbeiten. Die Programme berücksichtigen aktuelle Fragestellungen oder Werke zeitgenössischer Komponist:innen, die oft gleichzeitig als «composer in residence» an der ZHdK weilen.

Lars Mlekusch, Leitung
Nach Studien in Basel, Chicago, Amsterdam und Paris wirkte Lars Mlekusch zunächst international als Saxophonist, bevor er sich zunehmend auch als Dirigent zu empfehlen begann. So dirigiert er u.a. im Musikverein Wien, Wiener Konzerthaus, Royal Concertgebouw und Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, National Concert Hall Taipei, Casa da Música Porto und auf Festivals wie Wien Modern, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Impuls Academy und Festival Graz, Aspekte Salzburg. Dabei arbeitet er mit führenden Solistenensembles wie Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Phace, Österreichisches Ensemble für Neue Musik OENM u.a. In der Saison 2021/2022 debütiert er im grossen Saal der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. Ein besonderes Anliegen ist der Austausch mit jungen Musikern. Seit 2015 ist er Professor an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK), davor war er Universitätsprofessor an der Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien (MUK). Er gibt weltweit Kurse an renommierten Musikhochschulen und wirkt als Juror bei internationalen Wettbewerben.

Raphael Belfiore - Edgar Varèse and the Jazzmen (UA)
Edgar Varèse and the Jazzmen is a piece for amplified ensemble and fixed media based on a found recording in which Edgar Varèse meets with notorious jazzmen such as Charles Mingus and Art Farmer. Despite its historical importance, the recording is of low informational value. It documents a transitional moment in which musicians experiment and have unintelligible discussions. The piece is a series of six variations taking this recording — and its ambivalent state between information and noise — as a basis. In each one, different parts of the same (however sometimes processed) recording are replaced with instrumental sounds, implementing each time a different understanding of the concept of noise.
Die Orchesterausbildung nimmt an der ZHdK einen zentralen Stellenwert ein. Die repräsentativen Hochschulformationen «Orchester der ZHdK», das Ensemble für zeitgenössische Musik «Arc-en-Ciel» sowie das polivalente «Kammerensemble der ZHdK» bereichern das Kulturangebot im Grossraum Zürich.
Das Programmspektrum umfasst das Repertoire ab dem frühen 18. bis ins 21. Jahrhundert für Formationen vom kleinbesetzen Kammerensemble bis zum grossen Sinfonieorchester. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit den Orchestern der Tonhalle und der Oper Zürich, des Musikkollegiums Winterthur und dem Zürcher Kammerorchester erhalten die Studierenden Praxis und Einblick in die Welt der Berufsorchester.
