This paper analyses a Malawian ritual performance using the theoretical framework of postdramatic theatre, as opposed to analysing the ritual theatrical performance through an Aristotelian theatrical model. Given that the Malawian ritual is a theatre experience, the paper examines whether the Malawian ritual performance fits the postdramatic theatrical framework or not. It assesses as to what extent does the Malawian ritual performance em-ulate the postdramatic aspects of text, time, space, body and media. In the final analysis, the paper considers the implications of examining a Malawian ritual performance from a postdramatic perspective. The main argument in the paper is that even though the Malaw-ian ritual performance in question arguably fits the postdramatic theatrical model to a larg-er extent, it simultaneously challenges the new theatre theory considering that the ritual performance itself is in essence “pre-dramatic”.
