The term “collections” does not only arise in the context of museums, it also plays a central role in the fashion and beauty industry. Those collections might even have a greater influence, primarily on women, than art collections: they determine a big part of women’s everyday lives and have also been a reason for women’s exploitation. By combining nail polish giant Essies Fall 2018 Collection with historic paintings of the Kunsthaus Zürich and advertisement-posters of the Museum für Gestaltung, a light is shed on the social, economic and sexual pressures women have faced throughout history until today. “The Fall” connects art, design and the controversial fashion industry to question society’s image of women in a jarring way.
