A distance of one million parsecs (approximately 3,260,000 light-years) is commonly denoted by the megaparsec (Mpc). Astronomers typically measure the distances between neighbouring galaxies and galaxy clusters in megaparsecs.
Galactic distances are sometimes given in units of Mpc/h (as in "50/h Mpc"). h is a parameter in the range [0.5,0.75] reflecting the uncertainty in the value of the Hubble constant H for the rate of expansion of the universe: h = H / (100 km/s/Mpc). Zu sehen ist eine Art Screenshot der Millenium Simulation der frühen Bildung von Galaxienhaufen und Quasaren. Die Massangabe von 500 Megaparsec verweist auf gigantische Distanzen, sodass dieses Modell hier die grössten Dimensionen innerhalb unserer Modulus-Sammlung aufweist. Ein Parsec misst 30.9 Billionen (sic!) Kilometer, die weisse Linie misst Fünfhundertmillionen Parsec. Linie und Massangabe stellen eine Als-ob-Verbindung her, indem sie die Betrachtenden anweisen, das im Bild Dargestellte so anzusehen, als habe es die genannten gewaltigen Ausmasse. Dass die angewiesene Denkoperation notwendig an einem Mangel an Vorstellungsvermögen scheitern muss, verleiht dem Bild seinen besonderen Witz. Hier greift die Mathematik derart weit aus dem menschlichen Verfügungsbereich hinaus, dass dessen Grenzen deutlich spürbar werden. Da zudem aus physikalischen Gründen die hier dargestellte optische Wahrnehmung des Universums unmöglich ist, wird die schöpferische Kraft solcher mathematisch-digitaler Modelle und Bilder sichtbar. Wohin gehört das Resultat der Bildbetrachtung? In den Bereich der Mythen? Des spekulativen Realismus? Oder einfach in den des Modells? (rw)
