The “Kreativ-Werkstatt” is a cooperation project between four institutions in the city of Zurich. In the “Kreativ-Werkstatt”, I as an art educator at ZHdK put on a range of creative courses at the Atelierschule Zürich. An activity established with the Youth Red Cross in the canton of Zurich. The target group consists of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum from the MNA Zentrum (centre for unaccompanied minors) in Zollikon as well as students from the Atelierschule Zürich. The students from the Atelierschule do not take on leading roles in this project but instead use their previous knowledge in creative areas and their understanding of how the studio works to take on mentoring roles. The aim of the project is to achieve social inclusion, not social integration. I am trying to build a bridge between the rather isolated world of the MNA Zentrum and an institution, a school in Zurich’s city centre. A bridge that aims to (re)open the prospect of immersing yourself into a creative world and offers the young asylum seekers a platform to become aware of their potential interests. I see the exchange between the students and the MNA residents as a fruitful encounter for all. Finding common ground, getting busy, enjoying crafts and creating, having fun and building friendships together are at the heart of this partnership.
