- Radically interpreted, collections begin with concentrations of matter, atoms, molecules, which take on structure through complex processes of attraction and repulsion to become, upon human involvement, what humans perceive as things. At the human level the attractions and repulsions between things take place in the psyche, urging us to influence our surroundings, at times surprising ourselves with the unexpected consequences of our activity.
And so we build collections. What value do we place on the things in our collections? How do they appear in relation to each other? How do the circumstances in which they arise affect our perception? Is there, as Baron van der Heydt speculated, an Ars Una?

- Held, Heldin [/Héld/,/Héldin/], Substantiv, m/f jemand, der sich mit Unerschrockenheit und Mut einer schweren Aufgabe stellt, eine ungewöhnliche Tat vollbringt.
Um Held*innen ranken sich Sagen und Legenden, Erzählungen und Mythen. Sie scheinen einer längst vergangenen Zeit anzugehören.
WE NEED MORE HEROES fordert deshalb als Strassenausstellung Held*innen dort, wo sie gebraucht werden: im alltäglichen Leben. Ausgehend von den lyrischen Songtexten des französischen Künstlerkollektivs Fauve entstehen in Kombination mit ausgewählten Werken der Sammlungen des Museums für Gestaltung und des Kunsthauses Zürich neue Erzählungen über Held*innen. Die Ausstellung lädt so zum Nachdenken über heldenhafte Taten ein und gibt Mut, selbst aufzustehen.

- «Der neue Mensch fingert, statt zu handeln», so beschreibt der Philosoph Byung-Chul Hanin seinem Essay «Im Schwarm» prägnant ein Alltagsphänomen der digital vernetzten Gesellschaft. Alles scheint greifbar, per Fingerklick. Auch digitale Sammlungsbestände sollen den Zugang erleichtern.
Die Ausstellung überträgt das Phänomen auf die kuratorische Praxis. Der Finger des Kurators wählt aus und stellt, in dem er über die Bildoberfläche fährt, eine direkte Verbindung zum Werk her. Für das Museum ist das ein Regelverstoss und für den Kurator ein Dilemma, wünscht er sich doch nichts sehnlicher alsden Kontakt zum Werk.
Ausschlaggebend für die Idee sind die «Fruit Art Videos» von Stephanie Sarley. In ihren kurzen Videos auf Instagram befingert sie saftige Früchte. Ihr Instagram Konto wurde aufgrund dessen schon mehrere Male von Facebook blockiert.

- Die Ausstellung «Selfstbildnisse» bietet einen Blick auf Selbstbildnisse von Künstlerinnen der Renaissance bis hin zur Gegenwart.
«Selfstbildnisse» liefert Anregungen, um sich mit dem historischen und gegenwärtigen Stellenwert von Selbstbildnissen in unserem Alltag, in der Kunst und in der Gesellschaft auseinanderzusetzen.
Seit der Erfindung des Smartphones, kann jeder Selfies machen, liken und sharen. Im Jahr 2018 zeigte das Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig in der Ausstellung «Virtual Normality» Werke von Netz-Künstlerinnen wie Iyumi Miyasaki und Avrida Byström. Ihre Arbeiten korrelieren auf gängige Inszenierungspraktiken, in dem sie diese aufgreifen, ablehnen oder transformieren. Ihre Arbeiten ermöglichen einen veränderten Blick auf historische Selbstbildnisse.

- The term “collections” does not only arise in the context of museums, it also plays a central role in the fashion and beauty industry. Those collections might even have a greater influence, primarily on women, than art collections: they determine a big part of women’s everyday lives and have also been a reason for women’s exploitation. By combining nail polish giant Essies Fall 2018 Collection with historic paintings of the Kunsthaus Zürich and advertisement-posters of the Museum für Gestaltung, a light is shed on the social, economic and sexual pressures women have faced throughout history until today. “The Fall” connects art, design and the controversial fashion industry to question society’s image of women in a jarring way.

- Dem Mondzyklus wird in verschiedenen Kulturen oder in esoterischen Gefilden Einfluss auf den weiblichen Zyklus zugeschrieben. Auch formalästhetisch kommt es zu Überschneidungen der Darstellungsweisen dieser periodischen Vorgänge – die heranwachsende Eizelle synchron zum zunehmenden Mond. So gibt es Versuche diese natürlichen „organischen“ Vorgänge schematisch in Rasterformen zu bringen.
In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Hygienemuseum Dresden, dem Museum für Gestaltung Zürich und dem Kunsthaus Zürich entstand die Ausstellung „28“, welche den Fokus auf die Verknüpfungen von Frauenkörpern und Mond legt und nach den daraus resultierenden Zuschreibungen fragt.
Gibt es so etwas wie weibliche Zeitlichkeit? Und wie weit wird das binäre Konstrukt von Frau und Mann gestützt durch Verknüpfungen zur Dichotomie Mond und Sonne?

- Der Panther erweist sich als Trickster-Figur, der sich im Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Emanzipation und Domestizierung ständig zu wandeln weiss. Mal taucht der Panther in Erzählungen von politischen Ikonen auf, dann in der Popkultur, um später als Akteur im globalen Handel zu erscheinen. Er springt aus der Zeit des Kolonialismus in die Gegenwart und wieder zurück. Er stürzt sich auf Sammlungsbestände und betrachtet diese mit einem anti-rassistischen und konsumkritischen Blick, um Diskriminierungs- und Machtverhältnisse in der Gesellschaft sichtbar machen.
Für Combining Collections verbündet sich der Panther mit der künstlerischen Arbeit von Mariano Gaich. Daraus entsteht eine dritte Sammlung, die auf unterschiedliche Quelle – wie museale Sammlungen und Fundgegenstände vom Flohmärkten – zurückgreift.

- The word puzzle has different meanings. Most commonly it is an assembly of pieces, which show a small detail and when put together they produce a complete image. A puzzle can also be a question or person that is difficult to understand.
By collecting images from the catalogues of the Kunsthaus Zürich, Museum für Gestaltung and Sammlung Ringier, I created my one puzzle. It’s a puzzle consisting of fragments of photographies from Rineke Dijkstra, pieces of text describing the works of Cy Twombly and elements from Roza El Hassan video installations. Followed by my intuition, taste, aesthetic interest, I began to look through the catalogues and in a very spontaneous fashion I started collecting and combining the images that caught my eye. This exercise helped me find new readings for the individual art pieces and allowed me to contextualize them freely.
