Description in English | - This thesis is about walks through the city. I investigate which tradition I place myself in as a walking artist, starting from the assumption that walking through the city is conducive to intensive cognitive and perceptual experiences. I investigate whether there may be a subversive potential lurking within the act of walking, and, if so, where it might be found.
Since the Zurich University of the Arts moved into its new premises in the Toni-Arial complex in 2014, I have made it a habit to walk each day from home to the Toni-Areal campus and back. Quite often, I let myself be tempted off the most direct route, and into journeys of exploration. Instead of turning left, I go to the right, stop and look around. Along the way, I take photographs and shoot videos, which I later use as starting points for my paintings.
As a walker, I also enter the wide expanse of walker discourses. This path gives insights into my choice of artistic and cultural theory philosophical positions from Europe and America since the nineteenth century. I pursue the question of which tradition I situate myself in as a walking artist. Walking is considered as an activity in which the processes of walking, thinking and perceiving are closely interwoven, and in which thinking, too, can suddenly take an unexpected turn. As a fundamental constituent element of a walking experience, the city and the ways in which walkers have perceived it are aspects of key thematic importance. I investigate whether there may be a subversive potential lurking within the act of walking, and if so, where it might be found. Finally, I discuss the walk as an access route and thematic source for painting. From this chapter, I make the transition to the artistic engagement with the material accompanying the thesis. This is a painter's exploration of the city, my walks through its streets, and my randomly strolling thoughts.
