Beschreibung
Im Januar 2024 setzte das Team der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste unter der Leitung von Prof. Andreas Werner einen bedeutenden Schritt in der Kooperation mit der der YSM «Yared School of Music» als Teil der Addis Abeba Universität. Ein Besuch knüpfte an das erfolgreiche interkulturelle Forschungsprojekt im November 2019 an, das vom Departement Musik der ZHdK und Studierenden des Studiengangs Komposition für Film, Theater und Medien durchgeführt wurde.
Der Januar 2024 markierte das Kick-Off für den Aufbau eines Masterstudiengangs in Audioengineering. Das Team, bestehend aus Prof. Andreas Werner, Prof. André Bellmont, Simon Könz, Jakob Schneider und Ella Malherbe, reiste vom 22. bis 31. Januar nach Addis Abeba. Ziel dieses Besuchs war es, die Grundlagen für den neuen Studiengang zu legen und die spezifischen Wünsche, Bedürfnisse und Ziele der «Yared School of Music» zu verstehen.
Während des Aufenthalts standen intensive Gespräche im Fokus. Das Team tauschte sich nicht nur mit Vertreter:innen der «Yared School of Music» aus, sondern setzte auch auf praktische Elemente wie Masterclasses. Der Besuch von Radio- und Fernsehstationen sowie lokalen Musikclubs bot Einblicke in die lokale Musikszene und verdeutlichte das Potenzial für einen Audioengineering-Studiengang.
Zusätzlich äusserte die «Yared School of Music» während des Besuchs das Bestreben nach dem Aufbau eines Gesangs-Bachelors, wofür Ella Malherbe als Singer-Songwriterin erstklassig qualifiziert ist.
Die Erfahrungen von Januar 2024 bestätigten das grosse Engagement und den Willen aller Beteiligten, Studiengänge in Audioengineering und Gesang erfolgreich aufzubauen. Es ist jedoch wichtig zu betonen, dass die ZHdK von sich aus keine Ressourcen für die Unterstützung dieses Projekts bereitstellen kann, da es sich eher um ein Entwicklungshilfe-Projekt handelt. Dennoch wurden gemeinsam die nächsten Schritte definiert und konkrete Planungen für die Umsetzung der Studiengänge begonnen.
Der Besuch vertiefte die bestehende Kooperation und legte den Grundstein für eine nachhaltige und fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste und der «Yared School of Music». Insbesondere wird angestrebt, dass, sobald die Studiengänge in Addis Abeba angelaufen sind, eine Grundlage für den Studierenden-Austausch zwischen Zürich und Addis Abeba geschaffen wird.
Situation
Die «Yared School of Music», Äthiopiens erste Musikhochschule, besteht seit 1954. Unter der Leitung der Universität Addis Abeba seit 1999, hat die Schule trotz vieler Herausforderungen bedeutende Fortschritte erzielt. Durch die Ausbildung von Musikfachleuten, Lehrpersonen und Interpret:innen, hat sie das kulturelle, intellektuelle und sozioökonomische Leben in Äthiopien massgeblich geprägt.
Die Absolvent:innen der «Yared School of Music» spielen eine entscheidende Rolle in Kulturzentren und Bildungseinrichtungen. Als Interpret:innen, Arrangeur:innen, Komponist:innen, Lehrer:innen und Forschende tragen sie massgeblich zur Entwicklung der äthiopischen Musikszene bei. Die Schule reagierte auf nationale Bildungsanforderungen, indem sie im Jahr 2013 einen landesweit harmonisierten modularen Lehrplan einführte, was ihre zentrale Rolle bei der Förderung musikalischer Talente in Äthiopien weiter unterstreicht.
Die YSM plant seit ca 4 Jahren (unterbrochen durch die Corona-Pandemie) die Einführung eines 2 – 3-jährigen Masterstudiengangs in Audioengineering. Das Hauptziel besteht darin, Absolvent:innen gezielt für Tätigkeiten in den Bereichen Live-Beschallung, Tonstudio, Radio und TV zu qualifizieren. Langfristig soll der Studiengang in das Curriculum der «Yared School of Music» integriert werden.
Aktueller Stand
In Äthiopien besteht eine hohe Nachfrage nach qualifizierten Fachkräften in den Bereichen Aufnahme und Live-Beschallung, die bisher durch Learning-by-doing erfolgt ist. Die «Yared School of Music» bietet die ideale Umgebung für die Implementierung des Studiengangs. Die Renovierung des Konzertsaals mit einer Kapazität von über 500 Zuhörer:innen ist in der finalen Phase. Zwei Tonstudios sind bereits vorhanden, benötigen jedoch technische Ausstattung und Know-how. Die Schule hat bisher keine Erfahrung in der Gestaltung eines Audioengineering-Studiengangs.
Herausforderungen
Die Herausforderungen umfassen die Ausarbeitung eines detaillierten Curriculums, die Identifikation qualifizierter Lehrkräfte vor Ort, die technische Ausstattung der Tonstudios und des Konzertsaals, logistische Aspekte des Versands von technischem Equipment nach Äthiopien sowie die Sicherstellung eines nachhaltigen, eigenständigen Betriebs und des Supports der Technik vor Ort.
Chancen
Der Studiengang ermöglicht einen strukturierten Ansatz zur Ausbildung qualifizierter Fachkräfte. Absolvent:innen haben lokale und internationale Karrieremöglichkeiten und tragen zur globalen Präsenz äthiopischer Kultur bei. Die Integration heimischer Produktionen über Streamingdienste schafft ein einzigartiges Berufsbild.
Unser Beitrag
Technische Ausstattung konzipieren und beschaffen, Installation der technischen Infrastruktur vor Ort, Curriculum im Austausch mit der «Yared School of Music» erarbeiten, 1 – 2 Masterclasses pro Jahr in Äthiopien durchführen, regelmässiger Austausch zur Unterstützung und Optimierung, gelegentliche Online-Inputs zu speziellen Themenbereichen.
Das Projekt erstreckt sich über 4 – 5 Jahre und wird durch klare Meilensteine gesteuert, um eine schrittweise und nachhaltige Implementierung des Studiengangs zu gewährleisten.

- Künstlerische Interventionen als produktive Wechselwirkung zwischen Bildung und Öffentlichkeit für mehr Teilhabe und Dialog.
Unsere Schweizerische Gesellschaft ist vielfältig. Lebenserfahrungen sind heterogen, multipel und von unterschiedlichen Realitäten und Kontexten geprägt. Was bedeutet es, diese Diversität anzuerkennen? Was sind Bedingungen, um den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhang zu gewährleisten?
Zielsetzung:
Der Fokus des Projekts liegt auf Migration, aus der Perspektive von Geflüchteten in der Schweiz. Die Ein- und Auswanderung in andere Länder und die damit verbundene Grenzüberschreitung, aber auch Behördenprozesse und erfahrene Zuschreibungen bilden bestimmte Erfahrungen.
In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Verein «Orient Express Verein für Kunst und Kultur» und gemeinsam mit Studierenden, hat das Projekt die Erarbeitung und Erprobung künstlerischer Erzählformen über Flucht zum Inhalt. Dabei geht es nicht nur um Fluchtgründe und Erlebnisse auf der Flucht, die in die Schweiz getragen werden. Es geht auch um Erfahrungen mit den Behörden, dem Schweizerischen Asylwesen, Gefühlen von Ohnmacht, Unwissen, dem Versuch, mit langen Wartezeiten und Widersprüchlichkeiten einen Umgang zu finden, sowie um Erlebnisse von Erleichterung, Anerkennung, Schutz, Sicherheit und Erfolg.
Methoden:
Wir beschäftigen uns mit Fragen der Identität, Zugehörigkeit und des Zusammenlebens in der Lehre und einem Workshop mit externen Künstler:innen. Anhand von Lebensgeschichten kommen wir miteinander in den Dialog und erproben unterschiedliche künstlerische Praxen. Im Laufe des Herbstsemesters sind zwei öffentliche Veranstaltungen geplant, die eine Filmschau und Resultate aus dem Projekt zum Inhalt haben.
Schlussfolgerung:
Zentral ist, unterschiedlichste biographische Erfahrungen – in ihren durchaus intersektionalen Ausprägungen – als Teil Schweiz-spezifischer Erfahrungen und eines Schweizerischen Kollektivs zu verstehen. Dies anzuerkennen, und eine Offenheit für den Dialog, erlaubt ein nachhaltigeres Zusammenleben in einer postmigrantischen Realität.

- Das Projekt schlägt einen interkulturellen Austausch zwischen je drei Kunststudierenden aus Mexico City und Zürich vor und mündet in einer Ausstellung. Über die Auseinandersetzung mit dem «Sense of a Place» (Lucy L. Lippard, 1997) und den künstlerischen Strategien, sich einem Ort zu nähern, erarbeiten die Studierenden ein eigenständiges Projekt, über die Spezifik eines ihnen bekannten Orts, für einen virtuellen Ausstellungskontext. Die Beschäftigung mit bekannten lokalen Gegebenheiten kontrastiert mit überholten Methoden des Erkundens «des Anderen». Das vorgeschlagene Projekt geht von postkolonialen Ansätzen und einem kritischen Verständnis von Kunst im globalen Kontext aus, widersetzt sich binären Vorstellungen von Zentrum und Peripherie im Kunstfeld und will anhand von Grassroots-Perspektiven Diversität und lokale ästhetische Praxen und Diskurse mit internationaler Relevanz fördern. Der interkulturelle Austausch findet im Dialog, in vorgängigen Workshops via Zoom sowie über die Erfahrung der Werke der anderen Teilnehmer:innen statt. Die Diskussionen der Studierenden über ihre Zugänge zu Orten und ihren Imaginationsräumen zu ihnen unbekannten physischen Orten werden in den Workshops mit Inputs von Gästen ergänzt.

Er studierte Film an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste und Time Based Art an der University of New South Wales-Fine Arts in Sydney.
Seine Arbeiten wurden an diversen Internationalen Film Festivals präsentiert, u.a. Int. Film Festival de Cannes, Int. Film Festival Locarno (in Competition), Autor:innentheatertage Berlin.
Als Videokünstler und Bühnenbildner arbeitet er für verschiedene Theater im deutschsprachigen Raum, u.a. Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Staatstheater Braunschweig.
Matthias Huser ist Masterabsolvent in Theaterregie der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (Abschluss 2024).

Utopien transnationaler Sozialräume
Der Wunsch nach einem Nationalstaat erstarkt. Die restriktive Migrationspolitik der Schweiz und die Abschottung Europas scheinen unverändert. Entspricht dieses Modell noch einer Welt in der freiwillige und unfreiwillige Migrationsbewegungen, Leben im Exil und Diasporastrukturen ständiger Teil sind?
Im Projekt …in transition… begegnen sich Menschen mit dem bisherigen Fokus der russischen Diaspora in unterschiedlichen Zwischenzuständen und versuchen sich als Try-out Institution.
Über performative Versuche haben wir uns folgenden Fragen angenähert:
Wo sind die Institutionen, die solchen Zwischenzuständen Raum geben?
Welche Räume braucht es in nationalstaatlich geprägten Gesellschaften, die kleine und grosse Zwischenzustände anerkennen und ihnen Raum geben können? Was bedeutet es, in Bewegung zu sein, zwischen verschiedenen Welten und Identitäten zu leben?
Welche zukünftigen Sozialräume können in den Zwischenzuständen entstehen?
In welchen Zwischenzuständen bewegst du dich?

Utopias of transnational social spaces
The desire for a nation-state is gaining strength. Switzerland's restrictive migration policy and Europe's isolationism appear unchanged. Does this model still fit a world where voluntary and involuntary migration movements, life in exile, and diaspora structures are a constant part?
In the project …in transition… people with a current focus on the Russian diaspora meet in different intermediate states and try out as a try-out institution.
Through performative experiments, we have approached the following questions:
Where are the institutions that provide space for such states of transition?
What spaces are needed in nation-state-oriented societies to recognize and accommodate small and large states of transition? What does it mean to be in motion, to live between different worlds and identities?
What future social spaces can emerge in states of transition?
In what states of transition do you find yourself?

I am Clara Thierry, a contemporary dancer born and raised in Mauritius. Over the past two years, I have been based in Switzerland, where I am currently completing my master's studies in teaching and coaching dance to professionals at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).
Prior to moving to Switzerland, I gained valuable experience working at the Mainfranken Theatre Würzburg under the direction of Dominique Dumais, as well as with the Tanzcompagnie Giessen with Tarek Assam and a diverse range of choreographers.
Previously I was at Rudra Bejart School and Cinevox Junior Company.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
For my Master project, I am developing a website that offers a 21-day program designed to support injured dancers in their recovery journey.
It's a comprehensive toolkit of self-care practices, drawing from various techniques, to guide dancers on their healing journey. Physical injury often prompts a reconnection with ourselves, and my goal is to empower individuals to understand the transformative role of movement in healing. Through exercises targeting body, mind, and emotions, participants gain the tools and support they need to navigate their recovery journey with grace and resilience.

I'm Victor Mendes, a Brazilian dancer and performer based in Zürich. My love for dance began with classical training and evolved into a passion for diverse forms of expression. I studied contemporary dance at the Ballet Junior de Genève and have been working with renowned artists across Europe. Now, as a freelance dancer, rehearsal director, choreographer assistant, drag performer and a sickening b*tch, I’m exploring new artistic avenues and recently earned an MA in Teaching and Coaching Professional Dancers.

Exploring the world of drag performance and its intersection with dance education, this study is all about giving dance students an extra boost of empowerment. It dives into how embracing the boldness of drag can seriously amp up self-confidence, shape personal identity, and set free new levels of expression. This isn't just about theory; it's packed with real-life examples and hands-on research to tackle the nitty-gritty challenges, think through the ethics, and craft teaching methods that make everyone feel welcome and charged up to dance their hearts out.

I changed from the martial art Wushu Kung-Fu to dance at the age of nine years old.
My heart belongs to dancing ever since, even though I also practise Kung-Fu again, along other forms of like Yoga.
Now I am dancing in the freelance scene and teach different styles since my graduation as a professional dancer from Iwanson in 2018.
For my graduation project I chose to combine my knowledge that I gained from other artforms and use it to strengthen people physically and mentally.

How can we use the teachings of the five elements from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) through exercise?
How does it affect the body and mind?
What new movement qualities can we discover and explore with their help?
Maybe something about that experience ourselves?
According to TCM, each element has different physical and mental/emotional attributes. We will each take one attribute and explore the element through various methods such as improvisation, partnering and movement material.
We use color, music and individually for each element - specific meridian stretches, Qigong movements and movement qualities from contemporary dance. This not only trains strength/flexibility, musicality, mindfulness and coordination, but also balances the elements in our own body,which has a positive effect on our mental and physical health.

In 2001 I started my professional dance career in Israel Ballet. From 2002 until 2015 I worked in Zurich Ballet and in 2015-2016 I joined Staatsballett Berlin.
During my dance career I’ve performed various classical and modern pieces from current repertoire and achieved multiple awards.
From 2018 on, I started working as a ballet teacher/rehearsal director at BA Contemporary Dance in the Zurich University of Arts.
In 2018 and 2023 I worked in La Scala and Vienna State Ballet staging Goldberg Variations choreographed by Heinz Spoerli.
In 2022 I was a jury member in Prix de Lausanne.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
With this project my goal was to create a structure for a ballet improvisation class.
For decades ballet has had defined and very structured rules, and I wanted to find a concept that complements the needs of participants with their own knowledge of ballet through improvisational tasks, enhance their intrinsic motivation through the process of making choices and developing greater levels of confidence.
This class is based on 3 levels, each level having 7 exercises.
The progress of each exercise is supported through a specific music concept created by Mladen Dabizljevic.

My journey in the world of ballet is a tale of passion, discipline, and continuous learning that has taken me from the vibrant classrooms of Taz to the grand stages of Zurich and Geneva, and finally into the reflective halls of academia. From a young age, I was captivated by the grace and power of ballet, a fascination that propelled me to pursue a rigorous training regimen at Taz, a place where my foundational skills were honed and my dreams began to take shape. The transition from student to professional dancer was a leap into a world where artistry and perfection met. My tenure at the Opera House Zurich was not just a job; it was an embodiment of my lifelong dream, allowing me to express stories through movement, alongside incredibly talented peers. The stage was where I felt most alive, under the spotlight where every pirouette and plié carried the weight of years of practice and dedication. Moving on to the Opera House Geneva, my journey continued to unfold in new and exciting ways. Each performance was an opportunity to connect with audiences, to share the beauty of ballet, and to push my physical and artistic limits. It was during this period that I also began to feel a strong inclination towards nurturing the next generation of dancers. The idea of passing on the knowledge and passion for ballet to young, aspiring dancers became increasingly appealing. This desire led me to pursue a master's in teaching and coaching dance professionals. Diving into the academic aspect of dance, I embarked on a quest to deepen my understanding of pedagogy, anatomy, and the psychological aspects of coaching. This phase of my career was about synthesizing my years of experience on stage with theoretical knowledge, to equip myself with the tools necessary to guide and inspire future dancers. Now, as I stand at the intersection of performance and education, I see my journey as a ballet dancer not just as a personal achievement, but as a foundation from which I can elevate others. My goal is to foster an environment of growth, resilience, and creativity for dance professionals, guiding them through the challenges and triumphs of a career in ballet. DIPLOMAPROJECT
In creating my master’s thesis, I’ve crafted a professional guidebook from the ground up, designed for ballet teachers stepping into guest roles at professional ballet companies. This project is born from my deep dive into countless conversations with seasoned ballet educators and an extensive analysis of what it really takes to make a mark in the ballet teaching world. I aimed to unravel the complex dynamics of adapting one’s teaching style to fit the nuanced environments of different ballet companies, all while ensuring the enrichment and growth of dancers under their tutelage. This guide book is more than just a collection of strategies; it’s a reflection of my journey to understand the symbiotic relationship between guest teachers and the companies they visit. I’ve distilled insights on how to navigate the professional ballet landscape, ensuring that every lesson, correction, and piece of advice enriches both the teacher’s and the dancers’ experiences. Through this thesis, I’m sharing a roadmap for guest ballet teachers to not only excel in their craft but also to forge meaningful, impactful engagements in the ever-evolving world of professional ballet.

- BIOGRAPHY
Rebeka Mondovics, born 1997 in Hungary. I am a performer, dancer and now as such, a choreographer. I approach this new phase with a lot of excitement and with a great reservoir of energy and creativity.
I graduated as a Bachelor of classical and contemporary dance at the Music and Arts of University of the City of Vienna. Later on I received my first engagement with Zfinmalta National Dance Ensemble. Afterwards I joined the Dance Ensemble of Volkstheater Rostock. Throughout my recent professional experience I could work with artist such as Georg Reischl, Mavin Khoo, Paolo Mangiola, Esther Balfe, Dimitri Chamblas, Jose Agudo.

„A body that is sensitive and subtle, and above all susceptible to the movements and gestures of bodies placed around it. An overwhelming sense of alienation and isolation disappears, making way for a performance imperative to connect with, and respond to, the world around the individual.“
Pleats of matter, and folds of the soul allows images of self-indulgent and rebellious bodies to appear. The movement aims to please through repetition, softness and enjoyment. The performers invite the audience on a ritualistic journey.

- BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1992, with a penchant for creativity, my journey led me through varied experiences
before discovering my passion for dance. Prior to my immersion in movement, I found fulfillment
as a chocolatier, relishing the hands-on process of crafting tangible delights. However, an
underlying desire to mold movement and emotion eventually drew me into the world of dance.
After studying dance in the US and transitioning from chocolatier to dancer-choreographer, I
found my rhythm choreographing and dancing with Metamorphic Dance, exploring the interplay
between movement and storytelling. This journey continued as I assumed roles as both dancer
and rehearsal director for Moving Spirits in Charlotte, NC, refining my skills and artistic vision.
Motivated by a desire to deepen my understanding of choreography and the tools used in its
creation, I pursued a Master's degree at the ZHDK. Here I have had the opportunity to uncover
the nuances of my creative voice and learn ways to share my approach to creation with future
generations of dancers and choreographers.
In each endeavor, whether crafting chocolates or choreographing a dance, I find fulfillment in
the act of sculpting something intricate out of raw materials. With hands that have shaped both
chocolate and movement, I continue to carve my path, guided by a steadfast passion for
expression and a commitment to passing on the joy found in the act of creation.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
Rituals, rites, and ceremonies serve as integral cultural markers, shaping societies and
subgroups across the globe. While often deeply rooted in tradition and symbolism, the
essence of movement within these practices raises intriguing questions about the
nature of purpose and meaning. In this project, I embark on a journey to investigate the
possibility of movement devoid of inherent significance, aiming to challenge
conventional notions surrounding ritualistic behavior.
My research delves into the universal presence of rituals and ceremonies, transcending
boundaries of culture and religion. I seek to unravel the communal purpose underlying
these practices and explore the ways in which movement shapes our collective identity.
By examining the mating dances of birds and drawing parallels with human rituals, I aim
to shed light on the fundamental essence of movement, stripped of cultural context and
symbolism.
Central to this exploration is the creation of a rite void of explicit purpose—a
choreographic endeavor aimed at celebrating movement for movement's sake. Through
meticulous study and analysis of avian mating rituals and human ceremonial practices, I
seek to transcribe the innate movements of birds onto the human form. This process
involves decoding the recurring pathways and shapes inherent in both natural and
man-made rituals, drawing inspiration from the seamless integration of movement and
instinct observed in the animal kingdom.
By juxtaposing the purposeful movements of animals with the spectacle of human
performance, I aim to provoke thought and challenge preconceived notions about the
significance of ritualistic behavior. Through this interdisciplinary exploration, I seek to
engage with broader questions surrounding the nature of meaning, identity, and
expression in both human and non-human realms.
