- Im Zentrum des Projekts Sound Colour Space – A Virtual Museum steht das Begriffsfeld Klang, Ton, Tonhöhe, Klangfarbe in seiner Beziehung zu visuellen Phänomenen und geometrischen Konzepten. Das Vorhaben versteht sich als Beitrag zu einem interdisziplinären Forschungsgebiet und erforscht seine adäquaten Darstellungs- und Vermittlungsformen.
Zahlreiche Wissenschaftler und Philosophen von der Antike bis zur heutigen Zeit haben die Beziehungen zwischen Ton, Farbe und Geometrie untersucht. Viele ihrer Visualisierungen zu akustischen, optischen und wahrnehmungsbezogenen Themen sprechen zu den Augen und sollen vergleichend studiert werden. Da ein gegebenes Bild oder Diagramm in verschiedenen Kontexten und mit unterschiedlichen Implikationen auftreten kann, erlaubt eine ausgeprägte Netzwerkarchitektur eine redundanzfreie Darstellung der betreffenden Inhalte. Neben der Entwicklung einer exemplarischen Webanwendung, wird das Themengebiet mit Beiträgen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und mit künstlerischen Anwendungen bearbeitet und in einen aktuellen Forschungskontext gestellt.

- In the framework of the research project »Mapping the Sound Ecology of the Swiss Alps« Philip Samartzis aims at a mapping of the sound ecology of the Bernese Alps and their environmental conditions, in order to demonstrate the transformative effects of climate change upon high-altitude regions.
The project is divided into two distinct phases. The first occurs at the High Altitude Research Station at Jungfraujoch (HFSJG) situated at an altitude of 3500 metres above sea level. A range of sensitive microphones, accelerometers and hydrophones will be placed in and around the station, and the surrounding alpine environment for one month to register natural, anthropogenic and geophysical forces.
The second phase of the project is situated at the ICST where the field recordings will be translated into a series of immersive sound compositions for exhibition, performance and broadcast. The compositions will be designed to provide new knowledge and encounters of endangered wilderness areas to international audiences unlikely to experience these rarefied ecologies and their attendant conditions firsthand.
Philip Samartzis is Coordinator of Sound in the School of Art – RMIT University, where he teaches courses in Sound Culture and Immersive Environments within the fine art degree. He researches in the areas of sound art, acoustic ecology and sound spatialization, and is currently chief investigator on the two research-projects Designing Sound for Health and Wellbeing and Spatial Dialgoues: Public Art and Climate Change. In 2010 Samartzis was awarded fellowships by the Australia Council for the Arts and the Australian Antarctic Division to document the effects of extreme climate and weather events on the human condition at Davis Station in Eastern Antarctica. Samartzis has performed and exhibited widely including presentations at The Cartier Foundation, Paris (2001); The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (2002); The Mori Arts Centre, Tokyo (2003) and The South African National Museum, Cape Town (2010). He has curated five Immersion festivals focusing on the theory and practice of sound spatialisation, published several solo compact discs and performed with leading international musicians including Sachiko M, Seiichi Yamamoto, Gunter Müller, Voice Crack, Keiji Haino, Oren Ambarchi, Reinhold Friedl.

- Das Projekt «Hands-on» hat ein Verfahren entwickelt, das künstlerisch-technische Prozesse in der Druckwerkstatt mehrperspektivisch und systematisch erfasst – detailliert in allen Arbeitsschritten, Teilhandlungen und Handgriffen, mit sämtlichen dabei verwendeten Materialien, Werkzeugen und Maschinen. So konnte ein Prototyp für eine potenziell umfassende Dokumentation gebaut werden, die nicht nur Handlungsabläufe, sondern auch die mit ihr eng verbundene Infrastruktur erfasst. Das Festhalten erfolgte mittels Kameras (Bewegtbildern), textlicher Aufzeichnungen und Interviews einerseits, andererseits über das digitale Inventarisieren von allem, was im Arbeitsprozess Verwendung fand oder erzeugt wurde – also auch der Artefakte und Spuren. Das Erfassen und Erschliessen folgte Methoden der qualitativen Forschung der Sozialwissenschaft und Ethnographie sowie der Archivpraxis.
Das Forschungsprojekt entwickelte eigens auch ein User Interface, eine Benutzerschnittstelle, die in zwei nebeneinanderliegenden Bildfeldern jene synchron aufgenommenen Videodokumente parallel aufführt, die den Künstler bzw. die Künstlerin und den Drucker in der Werkstatt bei der Arbeit zeigen. Zu jedem Zeitpunkt des filmisch aufgezeichneten Schaffensprozesses werden über den Zugriff auf die Datenbank sämtliche damit verknüpften Mediendateien, Aufzeichnungen und Inventarinhalte aufgerufen und dargestellt. Die Verknüpfungen sind über eine Kodierung bewerkstelligt worden, die wiederum Inventareinträge voraussetzt, die weit zahlreicher und differenzierter sind als in Museumsinventaren üblich. Das Kodieren gewinnt damit den Status eines wissenschaftlichen Erschliessens, wie wir es von traditionellen Inventaren her kennen. Um auch die einzelnen Arbeitsschritte, Handgriffe und sprachlichen Interaktionen in ihren Funktionen erfassen zu können, wurde speziell ein Prozessvokabular geschaffen und eingeführt.
Das Projekt «Hands-on. Dokumentation künstlerisch-technischer Prozesse im Druck» wurde vom Schweizerischer Nationalfonds (SNF) gefördert. Es wurde am Institute for Contemporary Art Research (IFCAR) der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) durchgeführt und dauerte drei Jahre (1. September 2018 bis 31. August 2021). Projektleiter war Christoph Schenker, Kunsttheoretiker und Experte in Künstlerischer Forschung. Zum Kern des Forschungsteams gehörten der Künstler Michael Günzburger und die Kunsthistorikerin Mara Züst, beide ausgewiesen im Feld des künstlerischen Drucks. Weitere Teammitarbeiter:innen waren der Filmschaffende Piet Esch, die Informationswissenschaftlerin Almira Medaric und der Wissenschaftsforscher Kris Decker.

Summary
Artistic and ethnographic work intersect where the camera is no longer merely an instrument of research or a visual medium. At this intersection, photographic or cinematic images themselves become the sensory bearers of latent knowledge. A shared field of Art and Ethnography opens up in this border zone. Its potential — for explorations, experiments and reflections — has far from been exhausted.
Between 2018 and 2020, a lecture series at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) further investigated these relationships. The resulting contributions (by artists, filmmakers, visual anthropologists, and theorists) are gathered in the present volume. «Trading Zones» brings together essays, interviews, and image-based work that illumine the audio-visual practices of camera-related work while transcending generic conventions: What is the documentary value of fiction? How do video installations circumvent linear narrations and forms of representation? Is there a difference between aesthetic and scientific knowledge?
Although the authors have diverse disciplinary backgrounds, their contributions emphasize that the camera, as an apparatus, questions the material process of visual perception and enables conversations between author, subject, object, and viewer. The contributions as such take into account all levels of camera-based work: recording, post-production, and presentation. Thus, Camera Work in Trading Zones invites new approaches of theoretical and practical interest to artists, researchers, filmmakers, and ethnographers and establishes a basis on which these related fields enable inventive experiences.

- Much has been speculated about the ambiguity of artworks and their potential to weave themselves into different horizons of meaning. The present card game takes this observation seriously. It gives voice to the concepts, forces, actors, artefacts and happenings that have been operating around the Wind Tunnel by Florian Dombois and his research group at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2012, and focuses on their still open potentials. Each card is a space of possibility and each card constellation its multiplication, which transforms into a here and now in the act of play, in your hands.

- The research project “Creating Commons” explores interstitial practices which open the space between art and commons. They are challenging established notions of contemporary aesthetic practice as well as of contemporary commons, requiring the development of a new theoretical and aesthetic framework for this emerging field.
The framing questions for the research are:
– how can new forms of organization and collaboration bring forth different kinds of cultural works and social relations?
– how are new property relations articulated?
– how can artistic practices contribute to the further developement of the commons as inclusive, diverse and democratic forms of organization?
– what role can art and an expanded understanding of aesthetics play in the advancement of the commons as a political project?
We think these are urgent questions, because commons constitute constantly evolving realities pointing beyond the growing commercialization of culture and its damaging effects.
The research project is located at the Institute for Contemporary Art Research, Zurich University of the Arts, financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grant: # 100016_169419) and conducted in cooperation with HeK (House of Electronic Arts Basel).
Research is conducted by Felix Stalder, Cornelia Sollfrank and Shusha Niederberger. The project started in January 2017 and runs for 36 months.
