Inspiriert von der Geschichte, dass Handelnde, die im 19. Jahrhundert Stoffe in ferne Länder verkauften, mit Textilfirmen in der Schweiz kommunizierten – hauptsächlich durch Briefe, die viele Male hin- und hergeschickt wurden, um die richtigen Entwürfe und Verkäufe zu bekommen – hat Jiaxi Han eine Verbindung zwischen dem Kanton Glarus und ihrer Heimatstadt in China hergestellt, aber in unterschiedlichen Zeitepochen und auf umgekehrte Weise.
In Jiaxi Hans Heimatstadt Guizhou beherrschen die Dorfbewohner:innen ein traditionelles Batikhandwerk mit Indigo-Färbungen. Statt industrieller Produktion zeichnen und färben die Menschen dort (meist Frauen) die Muster von Hand auf die Stoffe.
Jiaxi Han hat also einen Brief an ihren Heimatort gesendet, ein Glarner Stofftuch als Muster beigefügt, die Handwerker:innen dort gebeten, entsprechend Stoffe herzustellen und sie ihr in die Schweiz zu schicken.
Die Farbe Rot ist bei der Herstellung von Textilien im Glarnerland sehr beliebt. Deshalb hat Han hauptsächlich rote Stoffe als Muster gewählt. Gleichzeitig verwendet das traditionelle Handwerk in Hans Heimatort einen natürlichen Indigo-Farbstoff aus Pflanzen. Jedes Mal, wenn Jiaxi Han einen roten Stoff schickt, erhält sie eine Antwort in Blau.
Inspired by the history that in the 19th century, agents selling fabrics in other countries communicated with textile companies in Switzerland, mainly through letters sent back and forth many times to get the right designs and sales, I made a connection between Glarus and my hometown in China, and between different periods of time, in a reversed way.
In my hometown Guizhou, there is a traditional hand-made indigo-dyed batik craft among the villagers. Instead of industrial production, the people there (mostly women) draw the patterns by hand and dye the cloth by hand.
So I wrote to my hometown, attaching Glarner Tuechli as sample, and asked the craftswomen there to produce these fabrics accordingly and send them to me in Switzerland.
Red is very popular in the production of textiles in Glarus. So I mainly chose red fabrics as samples. At the same time, the traditional craft in my hometown uses a natural indigo dye from plants - every time I send a red fabric, I receive the reply in blue.
