The thesis is dealing with the question of improvements toward institutionalizing migration history(ies) in Germany and the motivation behind it. ‘Dokumentationszentrum und Museum über die Migration in Deutschland e.V.’ (DOMiD), being the most promising organization in the country surely has a paramount role in this process. But how is the atmosphere in Germany, when it comes to representing migrations and what kind of practices are there to collect materials or data for the exhibitions being organized?
What is a migration museum and what are the main characteristics and challenges of these museums? These questions generated the second pillar of the thesis developing parallel, from worldwide examples, European examples and all the way up to the situation in Germany. In this context the thesis refers to the Ellis Island National Museum of Migration in New York and Cité National de l’Histoire de l’Immigration (CNHI)in Paris, which are in dialog with each other and ultimately compares CNHI with the Central Museum of Migration to be constructed in Cologne.
