- This research project is focused on the act of walking as an artistic practice and as a method to trace the historical development of the bordersmof Zürich within the present landscape. This has been done by a series of speculative walks that have followed the paths of the borders in five different moments in time: starting with the Last Glacial Maximum (24,000 years ago), when the entire area except the Üetliberg was covered in ice, up to the zweite Stadtvereinigung in 1934 (present day borders). In these walks the intention has been to create a connection between
past and present, looking for traces or fragments (objects, places, situations, sounds, images, etc.) within the landscape that allow to construct a new cartography that entangles these different moments and delves deeper into alternative narratives of the city of Zürich. The artistic outcome has been a lecture-performance that constructs a non-chronological narrative through the development of the borders of the city of Zurich. Objects and places highlight unknown or little known parts of the history of the city and of how the center has related to the borders and what has been beyond. The text uses three languages and a lost sociolect to explore the nuances of translation of language and
experience. Using video, sound, projected images, traces/paper casts of objects and collected objects that unfold from a cardboard box; an ephemeral installation is slowly constructed that engages with layers of shadows, maps and traces of the pathway found through the city.

Beschreibung
Im Januar 2024 setzte das Team der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste unter der Leitung von Prof. Andreas Werner einen bedeutenden Schritt in der Kooperation mit der der YSM «Yared School of Music» als Teil der Addis Abeba Universität. Ein Besuch knüpfte an das erfolgreiche interkulturelle Forschungsprojekt im November 2019 an, das vom Departement Musik der ZHdK und Studierenden des Studiengangs Komposition für Film, Theater und Medien durchgeführt wurde.
Der Januar 2024 markierte das Kick-Off für den Aufbau eines Masterstudiengangs in Audioengineering. Das Team, bestehend aus Prof. Andreas Werner, Prof. André Bellmont, Simon Könz, Jakob Schneider und Ella Malherbe, reiste vom 22. bis 31. Januar nach Addis Abeba. Ziel dieses Besuchs war es, die Grundlagen für den neuen Studiengang zu legen und die spezifischen Wünsche, Bedürfnisse und Ziele der «Yared School of Music» zu verstehen.
Während des Aufenthalts standen intensive Gespräche im Fokus. Das Team tauschte sich nicht nur mit Vertreter:innen der «Yared School of Music» aus, sondern setzte auch auf praktische Elemente wie Masterclasses. Der Besuch von Radio- und Fernsehstationen sowie lokalen Musikclubs bot Einblicke in die lokale Musikszene und verdeutlichte das Potenzial für einen Audioengineering-Studiengang.
Zusätzlich äusserte die «Yared School of Music» während des Besuchs das Bestreben nach dem Aufbau eines Gesangs-Bachelors, wofür Ella Malherbe als Singer-Songwriterin erstklassig qualifiziert ist.
Die Erfahrungen von Januar 2024 bestätigten das grosse Engagement und den Willen aller Beteiligten, Studiengänge in Audioengineering und Gesang erfolgreich aufzubauen. Es ist jedoch wichtig zu betonen, dass die ZHdK von sich aus keine Ressourcen für die Unterstützung dieses Projekts bereitstellen kann, da es sich eher um ein Entwicklungshilfe-Projekt handelt. Dennoch wurden gemeinsam die nächsten Schritte definiert und konkrete Planungen für die Umsetzung der Studiengänge begonnen.
Der Besuch vertiefte die bestehende Kooperation und legte den Grundstein für eine nachhaltige und fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste und der «Yared School of Music». Insbesondere wird angestrebt, dass, sobald die Studiengänge in Addis Abeba angelaufen sind, eine Grundlage für den Studierenden-Austausch zwischen Zürich und Addis Abeba geschaffen wird.
Situation
Die «Yared School of Music», Äthiopiens erste Musikhochschule, besteht seit 1954. Unter der Leitung der Universität Addis Abeba seit 1999, hat die Schule trotz vieler Herausforderungen bedeutende Fortschritte erzielt. Durch die Ausbildung von Musikfachleuten, Lehrpersonen und Interpret:innen, hat sie das kulturelle, intellektuelle und sozioökonomische Leben in Äthiopien massgeblich geprägt.
Die Absolvent:innen der «Yared School of Music» spielen eine entscheidende Rolle in Kulturzentren und Bildungseinrichtungen. Als Interpret:innen, Arrangeur:innen, Komponist:innen, Lehrer:innen und Forschende tragen sie massgeblich zur Entwicklung der äthiopischen Musikszene bei. Die Schule reagierte auf nationale Bildungsanforderungen, indem sie im Jahr 2013 einen landesweit harmonisierten modularen Lehrplan einführte, was ihre zentrale Rolle bei der Förderung musikalischer Talente in Äthiopien weiter unterstreicht.
Die YSM plant seit ca 4 Jahren (unterbrochen durch die Corona-Pandemie) die Einführung eines 2 – 3-jährigen Masterstudiengangs in Audioengineering. Das Hauptziel besteht darin, Absolvent:innen gezielt für Tätigkeiten in den Bereichen Live-Beschallung, Tonstudio, Radio und TV zu qualifizieren. Langfristig soll der Studiengang in das Curriculum der «Yared School of Music» integriert werden.
Aktueller Stand
In Äthiopien besteht eine hohe Nachfrage nach qualifizierten Fachkräften in den Bereichen Aufnahme und Live-Beschallung, die bisher durch Learning-by-doing erfolgt ist. Die «Yared School of Music» bietet die ideale Umgebung für die Implementierung des Studiengangs. Die Renovierung des Konzertsaals mit einer Kapazität von über 500 Zuhörer:innen ist in der finalen Phase. Zwei Tonstudios sind bereits vorhanden, benötigen jedoch technische Ausstattung und Know-how. Die Schule hat bisher keine Erfahrung in der Gestaltung eines Audioengineering-Studiengangs.
Herausforderungen
Die Herausforderungen umfassen die Ausarbeitung eines detaillierten Curriculums, die Identifikation qualifizierter Lehrkräfte vor Ort, die technische Ausstattung der Tonstudios und des Konzertsaals, logistische Aspekte des Versands von technischem Equipment nach Äthiopien sowie die Sicherstellung eines nachhaltigen, eigenständigen Betriebs und des Supports der Technik vor Ort.
Chancen
Der Studiengang ermöglicht einen strukturierten Ansatz zur Ausbildung qualifizierter Fachkräfte. Absolvent:innen haben lokale und internationale Karrieremöglichkeiten und tragen zur globalen Präsenz äthiopischer Kultur bei. Die Integration heimischer Produktionen über Streamingdienste schafft ein einzigartiges Berufsbild.
Unser Beitrag
Technische Ausstattung konzipieren und beschaffen, Installation der technischen Infrastruktur vor Ort, Curriculum im Austausch mit der «Yared School of Music» erarbeiten, 1 – 2 Masterclasses pro Jahr in Äthiopien durchführen, regelmässiger Austausch zur Unterstützung und Optimierung, gelegentliche Online-Inputs zu speziellen Themenbereichen.
Das Projekt erstreckt sich über 4 – 5 Jahre und wird durch klare Meilensteine gesteuert, um eine schrittweise und nachhaltige Implementierung des Studiengangs zu gewährleisten.

- Ein interkulturelles Projekt zu Klangidentitäten im Nahen Osten und in Mitteleuropa.
Das Projekt «Listening Across the Borders» zielt darauf ab, zu erforschen, wie Identität sich durch Klang und Zuhören in den Regionen des Nahen Ostens und Mitteleuropas manifestiert. Inmitten der aktuellen Konfliktsituation in Israel und Palästina, geprägt von politischen und sozialen Spannungen, strebt die Initiative danach, neue Ausdrucks- und Kommunikationskanäle zwischen Künstler:innen aus Israel, der arabischen Welt und Europa zu schaffen. Die Schaffung sicherer Räume für Zusammenarbeit ermöglicht eine Reflexion über Identitäten und ihre Manifestation im Bereich des Klangs und Zuhörens, welche verschiedene, durch Narrative auferlegten Barrieren überwindet und einen fruchtbaren Boden für Dialog und gegenseitiges Verständnis bietet.
Das Projekt vereint Künstler:innen und Lehrende mit israelischen, arabischen und europäischen Hintergründen, um Aspekte des Klangs und Zuhörens aus künstlerischer und identitätsbezogener Perspektive zu behandeln. Durch die Konzentration auf klangliche Phänomene können die Teilnehmenden gemeinsame Narrative und Erfahrungen erkunden, die eine Plattform für kreative Ausdrucksformen bieten, die über politische Einschränkungen hinausgehen. Die Sensibilisierung für aktives Zuhören und das gemeinsame Erstellen von Klangwerken werden als wirksame Mittel zur Errichtung kultureller Brücken, zur Förderung von Empathie und zur Vertiefung des Verständnisses zwischen betroffenen Gemeinschaften dargestellt.
Die Ziele des Projekts umfassen die Erforschung von Klangidentitäten durch musikalische Improvisation und kollektive Schöpfung, die Förderung des kulturellen Austauschs zur Bereicherung des gegenseitigen Verständnisses und die Förderung der narrativen Flexibilität durch die Identifizierung von Dimensionen des Zuhörens, die bestehende Identitätsnarrative herausfordern können.
Das Projekt wird in sechs Phasen entwickelt, von der Sensibilisierung für das Zuhören bis zur Bewertung und Dokumentation. Face-to-Face- und virtuelle Workshops, kreative Sitzungen, die Remote-Erstellung gemeinsamer Werke und Veranstaltungen werden Teil dieses Prozesses sein, der in der Sammlung von Feedback, umfassender Dokumentation, Bewertung, Workshops und Vorträgen über den kulturellen und künstlerischen Einfluss des Projekts gipfelt.

- «Creating Neighbourhood» initiiert einen transkulturellen Austausch zwischen der benachbarten Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) und dem Bundesasylzentrum Zürich (BAZ). Das Projekt versteht sich als «Enablement» im Sinn sozialer Nachhaltigkeit, um Angebote der ZHdK für kulturschaffende und kulturinteressierte Bewohner:innen des BAZ zu öffnen, das Engagement von Studierenden im BAZ zu fördern, Begegnungsräume zu schaffen und partizipative Formate zu entwickeln.
Methoden:
«Creating Neighbourhood» ist ein Impuls aus dem Departement Design. Seit 2020 wird die Kooperation mit Asylsuchenden und Betreuenden des BAZ sowie Verantwortlichen des Staatssekretariats für Migration in Lehrveranstaltungen von «Trends & Identity» produktiv betrieben, um die Situation der Bewohner:innen des Zentrums durch partizipative Gestaltungsprozesse zu verbessern. 2023 gelangten die Mitarbeitenden des BAZ mit dem Wunsch an die ZHdK, die fruchtbare Beziehung zu erweitern und zu vertiefen. Das Projekt umfasst drei Themen:
• Das Öffnen ausgewählter Veranstaltungen der ZHdK für Asylsuchende und Angebote zu informellem Austausch und zur Teilhabe;
• Die Neugestaltung des Frauenraums im BAZ und die Durchführung gestalterischer Workshops durch Studierende der ZHdK;
• eine Gestaltung im Aussenraum des BAZ durch Design-Studierende
Zielsetzung:
Das wesentliche Ziel ist, Berührungsängste, die dem BAZ gegenüber bestehen, abzubauen und die Nachbarschaft als Ressource zu erkennen und anzunehmen. Der Schritt zum «Enablement» erfolgt durch Aktivierung des Interesses in den Departementen und durch die Schaffung einer einfachen, nachhaltigen, strukturellen Basis für die selbstorganisierte Gestaltung einer lebendigen Nachbarschaft. Interessierte Asylsuchende finden an der ZHdK Anregung und Begegnung mit der hiesigen Kultur und Ausbildung sowie ein Stück «Normalität» in ihrer Ausnahmesituation. An der ZHdK wächst durch die Begegnung mit Menschen aus anderen Kulturen die Kompetenz zu den Themen «Migration» und «transkulturelle Kommunikation».
Schlussfolgerung:
Im Kontext der Hochschule diskutieren wir Theorien der Diversität, der Identität und der postmigrantischen Schweiz. Der direkte Austausch mit Menschen, die andere kulturelle, gesellschaftliche, politische Erfahrungen mitbringen, kann ein wesentlicher Beitrag zur Differenzierung dieses Diskurses sein.

- Das Projekt schlägt einen interkulturellen Austausch zwischen je drei Kunststudierenden aus Mexico City und Zürich vor und mündet in einer Ausstellung. Über die Auseinandersetzung mit dem «Sense of a Place» (Lucy L. Lippard, 1997) und den künstlerischen Strategien, sich einem Ort zu nähern, erarbeiten die Studierenden ein eigenständiges Projekt, über die Spezifik eines ihnen bekannten Orts, für einen virtuellen Ausstellungskontext. Die Beschäftigung mit bekannten lokalen Gegebenheiten kontrastiert mit überholten Methoden des Erkundens «des Anderen». Das vorgeschlagene Projekt geht von postkolonialen Ansätzen und einem kritischen Verständnis von Kunst im globalen Kontext aus, widersetzt sich binären Vorstellungen von Zentrum und Peripherie im Kunstfeld und will anhand von Grassroots-Perspektiven Diversität und lokale ästhetische Praxen und Diskurse mit internationaler Relevanz fördern. Der interkulturelle Austausch findet im Dialog, in vorgängigen Workshops via Zoom sowie über die Erfahrung der Werke der anderen Teilnehmer:innen statt. Die Diskussionen der Studierenden über ihre Zugänge zu Orten und ihren Imaginationsräumen zu ihnen unbekannten physischen Orten werden in den Workshops mit Inputs von Gästen ergänzt.

I am Clara Thierry, a contemporary dancer born and raised in Mauritius. Over the past two years, I have been based in Switzerland, where I am currently completing my master's studies in teaching and coaching dance to professionals at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).
Prior to moving to Switzerland, I gained valuable experience working at the Mainfranken Theatre Würzburg under the direction of Dominique Dumais, as well as with the Tanzcompagnie Giessen with Tarek Assam and a diverse range of choreographers.
Previously I was at Rudra Bejart School and Cinevox Junior Company.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
For my Master project, I am developing a website that offers a 21-day program designed to support injured dancers in their recovery journey.
It's a comprehensive toolkit of self-care practices, drawing from various techniques, to guide dancers on their healing journey. Physical injury often prompts a reconnection with ourselves, and my goal is to empower individuals to understand the transformative role of movement in healing. Through exercises targeting body, mind, and emotions, participants gain the tools and support they need to navigate their recovery journey with grace and resilience.

I was born in 2002 in Livorno, Italy. At the age of four, I entered the dance studio and haven't left until today. After studying in different dance schools in Italy I was admitted at the Zurich University of the Art in 2021.During this year I had the opportunity to be able to work with choreographers such as Dunja Jocic, Nadav Zelner, Didy Veldman and many more.
In this last year of university I am joining Scapino Ballet Rotterdam as an intern and joining the company in the production " Song of the dark forest" and "Origin".

Behind the scenes, a dancer's journey is a careful and complex process that involves both physical and mental preparations. It all starts with an important warm-up routine to get the body ready for the upcoming performance. Moving beyond just the body, mental preparation becomes a big part of the process. As the performance gets closer, the dancer shifts to the routine of putting on makeup and costumes. This short film shows the careful work and dedication put into each moment, conducting in a journey that goes beyond just the physical aspects of dance, capturing the true essence of artistic expression.

My name is Lorenzo Capecci and I was born in Italy. I started dancing by taking Hip Hop and BreakDance classes and after two years I was also studying Ballet and contemporary dance.
In 2021 I graduated from the Dance High School of Teramo and I joined the Bachelor Contemporary program of the ZHdK. Here I had the chance to improve my technique, to explore my style and to work with important choreographers such as Dunja Jocic, Nadav Zelnar. I am attending my third year of University as a stagier at Scapino Ballet Rotterdam having the opportunity to tour in the Netherlands with the company.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
Globalization is a process wherein diverse cultures have the opportunity to come into contact and be influenced by each other. This happened in the dance field around the 2000s, when contemporary dance met various other styles, that helped to create different nuances of it, in the period that we now call Fusion Dance. With this project I want to investigate where urban dance and contemporary dance meet and contrast, to research where the boundaries are and explore how contemporary dance can be inspired by different beats.

My name is Marie da Silva and I was born and raised in the south of Germany.
Growing up in a small city surrounded by a loving and supporting family I found myself thriving in arts and especially dance.
After graduating school I started studying Contemporary Dance at the ZHdK in 2020 and got the chance to get to know myself and my moving body better.
Currently I am interning with the MN Dance Company under the direction of Natja Bremec and Michal Rynia.
This step wasn’t only a step towards independence but also confirmed my strong will to make it in this industry.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
Chiaroscuro is an artistic technique that uses strong contrast between light and dark to create a sense of volume and three dimensionality often found in portraits and still lifes of the renaissance but also in the baroque and romantic period.
In the context of this film I’m playing with that term in movement textures and visual approaches.
The pomegranate is used as a symbol for abundance, resurrection, recovery and femininity. It also often reocurs in still lifes. The brutal act of peeling the fruit reflects and echoes the balance of joy and challenge of human experience.
Shedding layers of clothing resembles ripping layers of the pomegranates skin before you reach the precious insides. Is the work you put in, the mess, the stain worth the sweet but sour seed?

Hello, nice to meet you, I’m Coko. And yes, that is indeed my name written on my passport. ;) I am also known as Cokita amongst my friends and I like the nice kick this nickname gives me.
I am an artist and dance has been accompanying me for almost my whole life. I would lie if I say I always loved it. But the one thing that I cherish at any time is that no matter where you’re from, no matter what language you speak, you can always connect with dance. It doesn’t have to be professional, doesn’t have to be pretty, nor good, it just has to come from your heart. And boy it took me long to realize that.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
Starting from the idea that the human is a vessel where emotions, thoughts and feelings are generated. Where and how to store them? Where and how to get rid of them? Is there a limit to the emission of our inner storm? Is there a limit to the capacity of our inner storage?
All the invisible unexplainable reality transforming, devouring, flourishing in a human mind and body.
All of it in every single one of us. All of it in one single body.

- BIOGRAPHY
Antonija is a multidisciplinary artist born in 2002 in Kumanovo, Macedonia. Her main focus is exploration of self and interpersonal relationships in a very raw and honest way told predominantly through movement and physicality. In her art practice she experiments with dance, film, video and performance art.
Growing up as the daughter of a dance studio owner and choreographer, Antonija was immersed in dance from an early age. As part of Dance Studio Ultra, she was taking classes in contemporary, jazz, modern and hip hop dance, where she competed and won more than 50 awards as a soloist and in group dances all over Europe. In her childhood she was also taking theatre, music, photography and drawing classes.
Her high school days were spent in State Music and Dance Educational Center “Ilija Nikolovski – Luj” in Skopje, Macedonia where her main focus was contemporary dance. Parallel to her high school education she collaborated with Skopje Dance Theatre, while also teaching and choreographing at her own dance studio.
Antonija's educational journey continued as she became the first Macedonian to pursue a bachelor's degree from Zurich University of the Arts in Switzerland, specializing in contemporary dance. Studying in Zurich offered her great opportunities for collaboration and learning from top professionals in the field. She gets acquainted with new dance techniques and methods, and collaborates with many internationally renowned choreographers from Europe and Asia. As part of Zurich University of the Arts, Antonija gets an opportunity to study abroad for a full year at California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita, California, USA. In California is where Antonija delves more into other art practices besides dancing and finds herself creating and experimenting more.
Right now Antonija is living in Los Angeles, finishing her year abroad at California Institute of the Arts. She will be graduating from Zurich University of the Arts in June 2024 with a bachelor thesis named “How does one touch a face” which consist from live performance, video installation and written thesis.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
As a dancer I am hyper aware of how people physically interact with one another. I always catch myself analyzing why and how people will touch me. Whatever that may be, a handshake, a hug, just a tap on the shoulder or a more intimate touch depends on the relationship I have with that person. I have noticed since I moved to Switzerland two years ago, and now United States of America that people are not as open and physical with one another as in where I come from, Macedonia.
In general in the world people do not really touch each other faces at all. My interest is how would one touch a face if it is allowed to them to interact/touch with my face without given very specific directions, or the only prompt is touch/interact with my face. Will everyone use their hands only? Will they use another body part? What happens if it is someone I have never met? Is it going to be emotional or purely physical? Will someone try to slap me? Or lick me or spit on me? Will they reenact a touch they already they experienced or they will try something they never tried before?

- BIOGRAPHY
My name is Mya Flieger, born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2002. Dance has been pivotal since childhood. At the age of 10, I joined Concervatoire Populaire de Genève, where I discovered contemporary dance under Lucy Nightingale's guidance. In 2017, I pursued formal dance training at Centre de formations professionnelles des Arts de Genève. Accepted into Zurich University of the Arts in 2020 for a Bachelor's in contemporary dance, I collaborated with esteemed choreographers, expanding my horizons. Currently in my final year, I interned at JUNGES Staatstheater in Braunschweig, Germany, with choreographer Barbara Fuchs until December 2023. These experiences shape my identity as an artist, fuelling my passion to explore the endless possibilities of dance.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
What if I danced outside a studio, a theatre or even just a space dedicated to dance? Based on this idea, my video project aims to highlight the richness of contemporary dance in unconventional environments. This practice may seem challenging, but in reality it is very rewarding and enriching. As you explore different spaces throughout my video project, you will see that the body responds differently to each place.
