«Best Kittycat Song feat.
«Finally a song about me», wie ein User auf Youtube kommentiert.
In 2013, Cast / Audiovisual Media students (4th semester) examined the phenomenon of the viral distribution of online videos. They created concepts for their own videos and their distribution – aiming to generate as many clicks as possible.
During the three weeks of the "Viral Video" module instructed by Nico Lypitkas and his assistant Eric Andreae four videos were produced which competed in a race for clicks:
The video "Pink – Nice Try" is the attempt to meticulously reproduce the video by singer Pink with "normal people" and to show a direct comparison in the video. Music videos are very popular on YouTube.
The video entitled "Roboy: Humanoid Robot singing & having fun" is the portrait of Roboy the robot. The video was published online simultaneously together the official presentation of the robot, an invention by Swiss Professor Rolf Pfeifer. The team tried to use the already great deal of attention by the media to generate clicks.
"Best Kittycat Song feat. Grumpy Cat" made cats dance. Cat videos are among the most viewed videos on the internet. The team animated trashy images of cats accompanied by a self-composed song about cats and Grumpy Cat. Furthermore, a Facebook and Twitter account matching the video were set up.
"Stupid guy puts his beard on fire" stages a failed experiment which is supposed to attract attention with a spectacular tongue of flame. The video seems to be filmed spontaneously although most of the comments quickly realized that the video was a "fake".
The last day of the module was at the same time the starting signal of the distribution phase. This phase took a month, until the day of the Cast / Audiovisual Media colloquium on 26 April 2013. On this day they evaluated wich video gained the most hits – without having spent a cent on advertising.
With over 30'000 in a month the video "Best Kittycat Song feat. Grumpy Cat" reached by far the biggest number of viewers. Until today the video was clicked over 4,8 million times and has almost 5,000 coments. "Finally a song about me", as a user on YouTube put it.
