BIOGRAPHY
I started ballet lessons at the ripe age of 2, although I am not sure that you can really call that dancing. My Russian family expected me to grow up and evolve into a Vaganova prima ballerina however that is far from the reality. I was slowly introduced to other styles of dance, like jazz, character dance and contemporary dance, of course. However, it wasn't until I started at the ZHdK, in September of 2021, that I really began developing and training in floorwork and contemporary dance styles. Since July of 2023, I am a member of dantzaz, a junior company in Donostia, Spain. I have had the joy of working with choreographers like Alexander Stavropoulos, LED Silhouette, Giovanni Insaudo and Paolo Mohovich. I don't know what my future in the world of dance looks like currently, but I am eager to discover more about myself as an artist along the way.
DIPLOMAPROJECT
In my film project, I aim to explore the relationship between an ageing body and dance. Why is there a negative pressure surrounding older dancers? Why are our bodies defined as older or younger in ways that differ from other social contexts?
I have interviewed 3 dancers, all in their 40’s but who continue to dance, teach and create. I wanted to understand their point of view as an older dancer and to question their own relationships with their bodies, and how this has changed throughout their careers. I have also interviewed a younger dancer, in her 20’s, to get her own opinion from the opposite side of the spectrum. In this film, the message that I hope the audience will receive is that, in this day and age, you can continue to dance without restraints for as long as you feel you can and should, and that this stigma surrounding the topic of ageing dancers should be broken.
A story from the swiss backcountry. Two brothers and two utopic goals: While Manuel (24) ) tries to build up an existence on the ramshackle farm of his family, René (27) wants to convince his younger brother to join his criminal activities. René is dreaming of a future for both together on Teneriffa, but Manuel prefers to go his own way.
Meanwhile Sara (19) starts to like the reckless brother.
“Tectonic Shifts / Metabolic Rifts” is an art project that questions the naturalization of catastrophes
within different cultural contexts. It has a global focus, based on artistic research and activities I
have conducted in Switzerland, Turkey, and Japan. The Avina Fund’s support would assist me to
create a video installation and photographic series that will be displayed for my MFA Diploma
Exhibition in June 2019. These works will be made in collaboration with a network of other artists,
researchers, and artistic organizations that have already committed to supporting the project.
The master's thesis is engaged in the analysis of the exhibition “Taxonomy Moldova. Re-Searching” that took place from the 5th to the 28th of September 2019 in the Republican College of Plastic Arts “Al. Plămădeală”, Chisinau, Moldova. It was a photography exhibition with an integrated program of workshops, interventions and public talks that started with the Summer de(School)ing format in August 2019. The exhibition was a continuation of the photographic mapping that explored the socio-spatial relations of Post-Soviet conditions in Moldova and is based on the collaboration with the photographer Volker Kreidler. Tanja Sokolnykova appears in this project in multiple roles: as a co-author of the photography project, as a curator and as an organizer of the program. Moreover, she considers this project as a meta-dialog, through which she is dealing with her own sense of belonging. The format of the exhibition was tied to the idea of a lived social space (Henry Lefebvre) and the interest was in finding paths of collaborations in Chisinau to build a common reason for learning together and working on the transformation of certain conditions and structures, and, as a result, activating an exchange between the educational institution, the exhibition, the students, the local cultural actors and different knowledge forms. The crucial aspect of the project as well as of the master thesis is the critical elaboration of the Post-Soviet condition from the perspective of decolonial thinking (Mignolo, Tlostanova, Țichindeleanu) with the aim to complicate the politics of belonging and to disclose the tensions between the categories of space and locality.
