Gegen die Regeln (Against the rules) – Production of a 360° film
Beschreibung
«Was geht eigentlich da oben in deinem Kopf ab?», fragt Anna ihren Freund Alex aufgebracht.
«Was bedeutet 360° für fiktionales Erzählen?

"Gegen die Regeln (Against the rules)" is the first Swiss fictional "virtual reality" film. Produced by Cast / Audiovisual Media students (5th semester) "Gegen die Regeln" is the first 360° love story. Thanks to the latest technological developments the viewers can experience this drama of jealousy about an open relationship in 360° space – without needing any special equipment. The audience can follow the couple's conflict on a web browser or on their mobile phones – or as an immersive experience with the help of so-called Google Cardboards.
"What is actually going on in your head?", Anna asks her boyfriend Alexander angrily. With the course of the romantic drama in 360° the viewer learns about the young couple's row. Too many mIsunderstandings, offences and desire for freedom – and Alex resorts to radical actions.
Head of Subject "Cast / Audiovisual Media" Prof Martin Zimper about his students' production: "The students have really done pioneer work. Virtual Reality is a huge media trend, a game changer in the field of moving image."
Both the production and shooting for 360°-films are radically different from "normal" film sets: "Gegen die Regeln" was shot with six GoPro cameras on a specially manufactured tripod. Microphones and light sources had to be hidden on the set in a way to be invisible for the viewer while still providing best possible lighting conditions and sound quality. Of course, the whole crew had to leave the room during the shooting to not appear in the frame.
"What are the consequence of 360° for fictional narration? The students have found answers to this question from the development phase until post-production and have created a moving romantic drama," says instructor Marc Lepetit. The students considered the storytelling aspect as both their biggest chance and challenge.
Since YouTube and Facebook support 360°-films it is possible to bring them to a wide public. Virtual Reality will surely be relevant to Cast / Audiovisual Media in the future.
