"I CAN FLOAT, MY FRIENDS"
Performance
Textil, Luftpolsterfolie
Kostüm, 700 cm x 300 cm
2021
The 02:37 minutes long video documentation of the performance I
CAN FLOAT, MY FRIENDS captures from above how the protagonist
floats in water. The costume appears to encase and expand simultaneously
the performer’s body – measuring almost three times
her height. The work comes alive thanks to the movement of the
surrounding water. The waves‘ motion, at once choreographic and
sculptural, remain only during a snapshot of a moment anchored
to the costume, suggesting an enclosed spherical space before getting
the possibility of flowing away.
Composed of multiple layers of textile, the wearable sculpture is a
vehicle through which the artist explores the relationship between
the body and the world. The protagonist is never only above, never
underneath, but actually within the water.
The interaction with the direct environment is increased. Therefore,
the feeling of belonging to the watery surrounding expanses and
the corporeal relationship to water becomes visible and real.
