Radically interpreted, collections begin with concentrations of matter, atoms, molecules, which take on structure through complex processes of attraction and repulsion to become, upon human involvement, what humans perceive as things. At the human level the attractions and repulsions between things take place in the psyche, urging us to influence our surroundings, at times surprising ourselves with the unexpected consequences of our activity.
And so we build collections. What value do we place on the things in our collections? How do they appear in relation to each other? How do the circumstances in which they arise affect our perception? Is there, as Baron van der Heydt speculated, an Ars Una?
