This thesis is an experimental examination, made by a scenographer who has a desire to challenge her spacious practice, which is built on a dualistic approach between the subject and the object.
The investigation is based on the Six Viewpoint, defined by Mary Overlie, which is a model dealing with the idea of the body in space in a performative context. The Six Viewpoint serves as an analytical frame, based on six strategies: Space, Shape, Time, Emotion, Movement and Story. Viewpoint does not aim to eliminate the boundary between body and space, and therefore the eight-armed octopus can contribute as a figure that eliminates this boundary. To get a more nuanced picture of how The Six Viewpoint and the idea of the eight armed octopuses work in practice, three performances artist have been involved as empirical material; Xavier Le Roy, Valie Export, Vito Acconci. Methodically, I incorporate the written and spoken language as the room where the illusory space can become a subject that merges with the body, in an experience of space and body as one.
The thesis is structured so it chronologically follows the investigation process, without missing explanatory parts of the writing process.
