HEIMliche Treppen im Toni

- Ausgehend von den sehr unterschiedlichen Arten von Treppenhäusern und deren Atmosphären stellte ich mir die Frage, ob ein Gebäude infolge einer Instrumentalisierung selber zum handelnden Subjekt werden könnte. Das Toni-Areal besteht aus einer öffentlich klar lesbaren Erschliessung und aus vielen labyrinthartigen kleineren (un)HEIMliche(re)n Gängen und Treppenhäusern. Einige sind Fluchtwege, andere nicht oder mutieren irgendwann im Verlauf(en). Das deutsche Wort "Heimlich" ist doppeldeutig: Einerseits steckt das Wort HEIM darin, welches "heimelig"/"vertraut" bedeuten kann, andererseits kann mit heimlich auch "versteckt"/"verborgen" gemeint sein. Was passiert mit diesen Kippfiguren, bei denen unklar ist, ob man in einem Raum oder ausserhalb (analog der Klein'schen Flasche) ist? Ist das Gebäude Objekt oder Subjekt? Schafft das Sicherheitsdispositiv Sicherheit oder Angst? Ist es heimelig, heimlich oder unheimlich?
Mit meiner praktischen Arbeit versuche ich die 21 mir unheimlichen Treppenhäuser mit Nutzungsänderungen anders zu besetzen. Was ist, wenn man in einem engen, grauen Treppenhaus ohne Fenster, wo man nie sicher ist, ob man trotz Badge wieder einen Ausweg findet, auf etwas Unerwartetes trifft? Auf Gegenstände, Nutzungen oder Personen, die man an diesem Ort nicht vermuten würde? Verändert dies etwas? Welche Spuren davon bleiben real oder in der Erinnerung zurück? Dazu gibt es im November 2015 in den Treppenhäusern 21 Interventionen, welche Spuren hinterlassen...

- My project explores what the concept of belonging means to me, and how my personal definition of home has changed. It thus explores how multiple places, with their own specific identities, can develop into a personal space that bridges the gap in-between. The geographical displacement between, for instance, Zurich and Isfahan stands in contrast to their presence in memory, creating a mixed, hybrid identity. Though it’s impossible to be in two places at once, memories of somewhere else can produce a counterpoint to the physical space in which one finds one’s self. This raises several questions about how memory functions, and how memories will be preserved.
My interest in this topic stems from the sense of loss or belonging that I felt when I moved to Zurich from Isfahan two years ago. My work seeks to respond to that experience through artistic means and asks: How do I create a sense of belonging in different situations? How do I create personal spaces?
I work with elements from my current surroundings and with a retrospective look at my former surroundings to examine how they combine and how they influence and comment on one another. Some of these elements include sounds connected to the most important moments in my life, others deal with displacements, intertwining distance and closeness in the experience of a migrant. The theoretical works of Yi-Fu Tuan, Denys Johnson-Davies, and Edward Relph have helped me to understand and reflect on concepts like space and place, the meaning of home, the sense of belonging, and the life in-between.

- Der Ausgangspunkt von “The voice from a silent body” ist eine schlichte Faszination für die Gebärdensprache. Diese lässt sich aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven untersuchen: Aus choreografischer Perspektive zeigt die Gebärdensprache auf, wie durch Strukturierung von abstrakter Bewegung Bedeutung entstehen kann. Die vierdimensionale Erscheinung der Gebärdensprache wiederum setzt für die Lesbarkeit und Produktion der Sprache Differenzierungen von simultanen, feinmotorischen Mechanismen voraus. Als Drittes rückt in der Anwendung der Gebärdensprache die direkte Kommunikation in den Vordergrund. Um sich diesen drei Perspektiven anzunähern, wird in der Arbeit die Gebärdensprache aus zwei unterschiedlichen Perspektiven untersucht, derjenigen der Sprachwissenschaftler/innen und derjenigen der Anwender/innen. Ein direkter Kontakt mit Vertretern der beiden Perspektiven ermöglicht ein experimentelles Setting aus Versuchsanordnungen, die den Dialog in eine künstlerische Praxis überführen sollen. Textliche Beschreibungen und Abbildungen der Gebärdensprache lassen eine Wechselwirkung zwischen Bild, Sprache und Bewegung entstehen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Aufmerksamkeit durch eine ästhetisch-künstlerische Form auf die alltägliche Kommunikation zu lenken und Fragen an die Performativität von Sprache und die Lesbarkeit von Bewegung zu stellen.

Towards Understanding the Music-Curatorial

- The goal of this Master’s project is to investigate the relationship between context and content through methods of the curatorial, focusing on the discipline of music. My research thematizes the double effect that exists between these two elements, which in turn raises questions of how to understand the role of the audience, the definition of the author, and the relationship between artistic and non-artistic production by various both human and non-human subjects.
As contemporary music moves slowly toward composing with extra-musical factors such as video clips or choreographed gestures, my research seeks to reflect on and participate in this development not from the perspective of the composer, but rather from the less artistic and more philosophical position of the curator, a figure that has in the past several years accompanied similar artistic shifts in other art forms towards theatricality, individualization, and self-reflexivity.
This project, which can be called music curating, investigates these issues through both theoretical texts and musical-curatorial projects. In every instance, my work also thematizes the question of a working methodology situated between various actors often possessing very diverse skills and backgrounds, a topic that deals directly with interdiscursive relations.

- I am totally intrigued by the idea of creating space that extends from the inside out. Learning through our own body, a body that moves, feels, and dreams. Designed from the body with its aspirations and needs. Being a fashion designer, I see clothing as an extension of our skin or body. Clothing further extended becomes an individual architecture. It is our outside while it also reflects our inside, albeit most privately. As we move around in public spaces with their individualized clothing or “architecture,” we are confronted with various cultural, social, and political issues. I am interested in exploring the blurring lines between the private and public in the context of these “wearable identities.” I am interested in using conventional and new materials together with the latest technology to create new interactions between the individuals or groups within a society. As in an imaginative world of a small child, certain spaces can be thought of as popping-up whenever one needs them. Thereafter, they are no longer visible. The idea is to envision a space with elements that combine our visual, hearing, and tactile senses so that the space is responsive to its users and has a playful character, and thereby allows its users to explore the surrounding space and thereby find their own space of retreat.
I approached these questions by creating various scenarios of future spaces inside and outside, in private and public spaces. When developing these scenarios, it helps to look at the status quo of existing public spaces and workspaces, for example. How much freedom of thought, how much relaxation do these spaces provide? Creating such scenarios, it might be possible to influence certain elements while creating such spaces. Such scenarios could be used to develop further design solutions to these issues.

Hanging, Grooving, and Strolling: Potential Interrelations and Transdisciplinary Thinking in the Arts

- My work is about modes of being a spectator and modes of making spaces for relations and thinking in the performer-spectator-community of today. It is about looking at the potential and importance of this community across various disciplines and categorizations. During my Master‘s, I have created a series of artistic laboratories and events in order to investigate different modes for the spectator to be and think in the live event, rather than to talk about participation and interaction. This also involves investigating modes of production inside and around, but that are not necessarily restricted to, the institution of the performing arts. My investigations have led to the three modalities of hanging, grooving, and strolling, which point to a social and durational way of spectating. My work reflects on a discourse on the politics of perception and on the role of the spectator in an event, linking to the works of various artists and writers, such as Mårten Spångberg, Jaques Rancière, and Henri Lefebre. My work is closely related to contemporary culture and society and an ongoing change of spectating and producing space in the multi-tasking, hyper-technological stage of interactions, while still adressing the potential and importance of the gathering of spectators and performers in the live-event.
