- OPEN SCORES. How to program the Commons

This exhibition brings together 16 practices through which artists articulate their own forms of (digital) commons. From online archives, to digital tools/infrastructure and educational formats, the projects envision a (post-)digital culture in which notions of collaboration, free access to knowledge, sustainable use of shared resources and data privacy are central.
For the exhibition, artists have developed a SCORE relating to their practice. A SCORE can have different meanings: It can be a general instruction, a working instruction, a performance instruction or an operating instruction. In any case, it is meant to lead to a realization of an intended action and as such is an interface between a human actor and an object/material/machine. And a SCORE can also be linked to a technical HOWTO document, in that it contains information on how to perform a specific task.
Within the exhibition, the newly developed SCORES add an aesthetic layer while pointing to the socio/political impact of the presented projects. The exhibition will also feature the interviews conducted as part of the research project as well as a temporary library on the subject of digital commons. Furthermore, there will be a program of talks, screenings, and workshops.

- Das Video ist Teil der Ergebnisse des SNF-Forschungsprojekts «Die fragmentierte Stadt», die in dem gleichnamigen Buch 2021 beim Jovis Verlag in Berlin veröffentlicht wurden.
Über drei Jahre hinweg stattfindende Beobachtungen, Spaziergänge und Begegnungen in Berlin, Graz und Zürich bilden die Grundlage von vier unterschiedlichen künstlerisch-ethnografischen Zugängen zu Exklusionserfahrungen und Aneignungsstrategien. In fotografischen, audiovisuellen, performativen und sprachlichen Untersuchungen entstanden Gedanken, Einsichten und Produkte, welche in Texten, Bildern und Videos vorgestellt werden.
Wo Menschen eng zusammenleben, gibt es Konkurrenz und Verdrängung. Beinahe selbstverständlich nehmen wir hin, dass Straßen und Plätze, Geschäfte, Restaurants und Cafés einige Personengruppen ausschließen. Dies widerspricht dem Ideal einer demokratischen offenen Gesellschaft mit gleichberechtigten Mitgliedern. Wie erleben Menschen, die am Rande der Gesellschaft stehen (oder sich dort sehen) öffentliche Stadträume? Wo fühlen sie sich willkommen, wo nicht? Wo, wie und warum entstehen Nutzungskonflikte? Diesen Fragen geht das Projekt «Die fragmentierte Stadt» nach.

Summary
Artistic and ethnographic work intersect where the camera is no longer merely an instrument of research or a visual medium. At this intersection, photographic or cinematic images themselves become the sensory bearers of latent knowledge. A shared field of Art and Ethnography opens up in this border zone. Its potential — for explorations, experiments and reflections — has far from been exhausted.
Between 2018 and 2020, a lecture series at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) further investigated these relationships. The resulting contributions (by artists, filmmakers, visual anthropologists, and theorists) are gathered in the present volume. «Trading Zones» brings together essays, interviews, and image-based work that illumine the audio-visual practices of camera-related work while transcending generic conventions: What is the documentary value of fiction? How do video installations circumvent linear narrations and forms of representation? Is there a difference between aesthetic and scientific knowledge?
Although the authors have diverse disciplinary backgrounds, their contributions emphasize that the camera, as an apparatus, questions the material process of visual perception and enables conversations between author, subject, object, and viewer. The contributions as such take into account all levels of camera-based work: recording, post-production, and presentation. Thus, Camera Work in Trading Zones invites new approaches of theoretical and practical interest to artists, researchers, filmmakers, and ethnographers and establishes a basis on which these related fields enable inventive experiences.

- Der digitale Raum bringt neue Geschichten und neue Erzählweisen hervor, die den Theaterbegriff seit Jahren hinterfragen, erweitern, aber auch an seine Grenzen stoßen lassen. Seien es inszenierte Chatgespräche, überzeichnete Figuren in den sozialen Medien oder Videospiel-verwandte Performances auf neu programmierten Websites - das Spielen von Charakteren, das Inszenieren von Erlebnissen, das Erzählen von Fiktionen, das Gestalten der Räume wurde in den vergangenen Jahren zu einer aktiven Praxis von Künstler*innen des digitalen Theaters. Doch was für die einen lustvolles Experimentieren mit neuen Paradigmen und Technologien bedeutet, löst bei anderen Theatermachenden oft Unverständnis oder gar Abwehrhaltungen aus. Das drückte sich darin aus, dass digitale Theaterproduktionen bis letztes Jahr kaum an Häusern der Stadt- und Staatstheater entstanden, sondern hauptsächlich in der freien Szene. Der Theatermainstream hielt sich aus diesen Auseinandersetzungen vornehmlich heraus und konzentrierte sich auf den
etablierten Theaterbetrieb. Dies änderte sich jedoch im Jahr 2020.
Im März 2020 hat der Corona Virus COVID-19 den deutschsprachigen Raum erreicht, woran viele Menschen auf der Welt litten. Viele sind ihm auch erlegen. Dies zwang die Bevölkerung, das bis dahin gewohnte Leben einzustellen, zu verändern und sich in Isolation zu begeben, um weitere Ansteckungen zu verhindern und Leben zu retten. Es war und ist eine physische und mentale Herausforderung für die globale Gemeinschaft. Denn auch wenn diese Zeilen in der Vergangenheitsform geschrieben sind, ist es im Moment, in dem sie geschrieben wurden, noch Realität. Eine Realität, die mit den einhergegangenen
Einschränkungen gezeigt hat, in was für unterschiedlichen Lebensumständen wir uns alle befinden. So hat die Maßnahme, alle Bühnen zu schließen und Veranstaltungen mit physischen Menschenansammlungen abzusagen, die Theatermachenden über den Zeitraum März 2020 - Juni 2021 auf unterschiedliche Weisen beeinflusst, ja zum Teil sehr schwer getroffen, was an dieser Stelle erwähnt werden muss. Doch trotz dieser
herausfordernden Umstände wurden diese Macher*innen auch aktiviert. Wie nie zuvor gab es eine kollektive und kreative Hinwendung zum Theater im digitalen Raum.
